Q&A

Q & A

Q: Why did you become a reproductive endocrinologist?

A:

The timing for entering my Reproductive Endocrine Fellowship at UCLA was fortunate in that the IVF field was just beginning. When I began training, my mentors were building our first IVF clinic and lab. I was fortunate to see the evolution of a program from the ground up, as well as the progress in our field over 30 years. The changes and evolution of reproductive medicine have been staggering and I feel privileged to be part of this field.

Q: What about SGF makes you the most proud?

A:

I am excited to be part of the SGF team. The ability to immediately consult with multiple physicians at any time enhances the quality of care for our patients. Not only can we get expert opinions, but the strength in numbers allows us to answer questions in a scientific way. All of this propels our field forward.

Q: Describe a time when you were inspired by a patient.

A:

During my residency, I’ll never forget a patient we cared for with a gynecological cancer. She was only 16 and very ill, but always positive and cheerful. She never complained about the tough treatments. Her spirits soared as the paramedics and I took her from the hospital to her high school graduation; she accepted her diploma in a wheelchair still attached to multiple IV lines. She thought I did her a favor, but nothing could be further from the truth!

Q: What are your hobbies?

A:

My wife and I love traveling to New York and visiting our two daughters. I stay very active, but sometimes become too obsessed with my activities, which is why I had to throw away my tennis racquet and golf clubs. My wife said, whatever hobby is next, don’t overdo it! Somehow, my new passion is triathlon training!

Q: What is your approach to helping patients who are struggling?

A:

The diagnosis and treatment are based on scientific, proven data. However, as our patients know, nothing is quite cut and dry. Therefore, there can be many paths to take. I believe the patient is an integral part of the process and should participate in all the decision-making. As long as they’re fully informed, we try to comfortably move through the process together.

"We really want to make it clear how thankful we are for your thoughts, prayers, and support during this baby journey of ours. We also owe a lot to Dr. Kenneth Steingold – the man who said we would get here and lived up to his word. Because of him, we are now one of those creepy families who put ultrasound photos in their Christmas cards. Besides being a great, compassionate doctor, he’s the only fertility specialist we know whose office is decorated with Family Guy paraphernalia. To us, he truly is the family guy."

"We cannot say enough wonderful things about Dr. Steingold and his staff. He went above and beyond in his efforts to help us build our family. Due in large part to his knowledge and support, we were blessed with our beautiful children. We have referred several of our friends to him and will continue to do so."

"There are still times when I cannot believe we have two beautiful daughters. They are 7 years old now and my memories of infertility and pregnancy are vivid like yesterday. We went through months of testing, procedures, the endless waiting and many disappointments. I prayed diligently, put my faith in God and trusted Dr. Steingold and his dedicated staff. Together we proceeded toward IVF, a step I never thought I would take. Dr. Steingold and his staff were with us every scary, uncertain step of the way. Even living two hours away our every need was met and my many questions answered. We all celebrated and breathes sighs of relief when that first ultrasound showed two tiny beating hearts! Thank you!"
