Biography

Joshua Combs, M.D., is a Board Certified Reproductive Endocrinologist joining Shady Grove Fertility’s Colorado Springs location — bringing a clinical background shaped by more than two decades of service to military families across the United States, Europe, and Asia. Dr. Combs has spent his career caring for patients who face the unique fertility challenges that come with military life: deployments, frequent relocations, operational demands, and the profound commitment to family that defines this community. Colorado Springs, home to some of the nation’s largest military installations, is a natural home for his practice. 

Dr. Combs completed his residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at the San Antonio Uniformed Services Health Education Consortium at Wilford Hall and his fellowship in Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility through the National Institutes of Health and Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda. He holds appointments as an Associate Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences, the University of Colorado, and has served in staff physician, chief, and medical director roles across military installations in Virginia, Japan, and the United Kingdom. 

His published research spans preimplantation genetic testing for BRCA-1, endometriosis and ART outcomes, gestational carrier versus uterine transplantation in uterine-factor infertility, and fertility care for patients with sickle cell disease — including peer-reviewed work in Fertility and Sterility and an invited cover image. He has a particular clinical focus on military populations and fertility preservation, LGBTQIA+ family building, and advancing access to evidence-based fertility care for underserved communities. 

Dr. Combs approaches each case as a team effort — listening first, then building a plan grounded in the best available evidence, with the patient empowered every step of the way. He brings to SGF the same disciplined focus and commitment to excellence that defined his military career.

Q&A

I have always had an innate drive to help others. Being able to choose a profession in which I get to do this daily is a gift. Do what you love and call it work! 

I always enjoyed the field as a resident and was drawn to infertility patients while practicing as a general OB/GYN. When it came time to start my own family, my wife and I found ourselves on the patient side of fertility treatments. Without IVF, I would not have the family I do today. I chose to seek additional training so I could pass the gift of family-building on to others. 

My long-standing affiliation with the military has provided me with countless stories of patients — who against all odds of deployments, PCS moves, and service-before-self sacrifices — still persevere to build their families. These families will always hold a special place in my heart. 

Listen first. Then look into my network of resources to figure out how we can overcome whatever challenges they may be facing. Along the way, empower the patient with knowledge to help them strengthen their own foundation/participation in their healthcare.
