Your Care Team

October 17, 2019 by Shady Grove Fertility

Shady Grove Fertility (SGF) is proud to welcome Anate Brauer, M.D. to the New York Medical Team. Dr. Brauer will serve as the New York IVF Director and begins seeing new patients at SGF’s flagship New York office located in the heart of Manhattan in November 2019. Dr. Brauer will provide a full range of state-of-the-art in-house diagnostic and treatment options for female and male infertility, elective egg freezing, LGBTQ family building, and fertility preservation prior to cancer treatment.

Dr. Brauer earned her medical degree from the George Washington University School of Medicine, where she was elected to the prestigious Alpha Omega Alpha medical honor society. She completed her residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at New York Presbyterian Hospital-Weill Cornell Medical Center. Dr. Brauer went on to complete her fellowship training in Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility at the Ronald O. Perelman and Claudia Cohen Center for Reproductive Medicine and Infertility-Weill Cornell Medical College. Prior to joining Shady Grove Fertility, Dr. Brauer was an Assistant Clinical Professor at NYU School of Medicine.

Dr. Brauer has published and presented at numerous national meetings on the topics of optimizing fertility treatments in patients with diminished ovarian reserve, polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS), or those using a gestational surrogate; fertility preservation; and complementary therapies in infertility. She is especially passionate about helping young patients with cancer build families. This passion led her to serve on the Advisory Board of the Young Survivors Coalition.

She is also a regular contributor on a variety of women’s health topics to local and national media such as Parents, Reader’s Digest, Refinery 29, Woman’s Health Magazine, Byrdie, and Shape, to name a few. For Shape, she serves on their expert Brain Trust.

Dr. Brauer is very active in several medical organizations. She is a fellow of the American Congress of Obstetrics and Gynecology, an active member of the American Society for Reproductive Medicine, the Fertility Preservation Special Interest Group, the Society of Laparoendoscopic Surgeons, and the Westchester OBGYN Society.

Dr. Brauer has expertise in ovulation induction, in vitro fertilization (IVF), egg freezing, pre-implantation genetic testing and third-party reproduction including donor egg, donor sperm, donor embryo, and gestational surrogacy. She applies the latest clinical data, state-of-the-art technology, and extensive clinical experience to optimize pregnancy rates while minimizing patient stress with her supportive approach to care. She is also board certified in obstetrics and gynecology and reproductive endocrinology and infertility.

“From the get-go I felt like Dr. Brauer was the right doctor for me. Her personality made me want to grab a cup of coffee with her yet her brilliance was evident. Dr. Brauer called me personally for my exciting positive pregnancy test and my disappointing news of a chemical pregnancy. Both times she shared in the emotion of the call, super excited for the good news and leaving me with a positive outlook after the bad. I have trusted Dr. Brauer’s game plan implicitly and have complete faith she will get me pregnant. I have and will continue to refer Dr. Brauer to anyone who is looking for a doctor with the total package, great personality and brilliant,” shared a patient.

More about Dr. Anate Brauer

WHY DID YOU BECOME A REPRODUCTIVE ENDOCRINOLOGIST?
Dr. Brauer: I originally went into OB/GYN to practice Gynecologic Oncology. I loved surgery and women’s health, so I thought this specialty would be ideal in marrying my interests. As the intern, I spent much of my time on the GYN-Oncology service taking care of patients who were admitted to the hospital. I got to know them and their families well. I was intimately involved in their care plans. Their successes were my successes. Their failures were my failures. By nature, I am the ultimate optimist, never giving up hope. Sadly, I learned, that sometimes cancer wins. A good oncologist knows when to stop fighting. I could not accept this for my patients.

In my second year of residency, I spent more time in the operating room, often spending days with reproductive endocrinologists who did minimally invasive surgery. One of them invited me to join him in office hours. I loved it. Here is a field where optimism is the key ingredient to success. A field that allows me to mix my love of medicine, surgery, and persistent passion in helping almost anyone walking through the door achieve the most sought after treasure on earth, a family. I still maintain an interest in Oncology. I see young patients diagnosed with cancer often, but now I get to talk to them about the FUTURE and the life and family they will build AFTER cancer.

WHAT DO YOU ENJOY DOING IN YOUR SPARE TIME?
Dr. Brauer: Spending time with my husband and our three girls makes me the happiest. Through all my years of training, and now practice, time is limited, so I try to enjoy any time I have with my family. I also love to dance and happened to marry someone who is pretty good at it as well! I also LOVE to cook and enjoy running or spinning for exercise. Exercise has always been the cornerstone of wellbeing for me.

WHO INSPIRES YOU?
Dr. Brauer: My mom and, of course, my patients. Humans have this incredible ability to overcome adversity. I am always inspired by my patients who have been faced with incredible loss and are able to pick themselves up and move on to the next journey. Sometimes I feel that my patients are stronger than I am. They are truly my rocks.

My boulder is my mom. She was born in Poland to survivors of World War II. My mom always looks back on a wonderful upbringing in Poland. She moved her aging parents to Israel when she was in her 20s to go to medical school. In Israel, lectures are in Hebrew and textbooks are in English. My mom did not speak either. She would record the lectures, come home, take care of her parents, translate the lectures with a Polish-Hebrew dictionary, and study. This is how she got through medical school. Until this day, any time I have an important test or interview that I am nervous about she always says, “Well, at least you know the language!” She has inspired me to work hard and take every opportunity I am given.

WHAT IS YOUR APPROACH TO PATIENTS WHO ARE STRUGGLING?
Dr. Brauer: Listening is the most important place to start. Knowing where you came from is crucial to understanding where you are going. Next is having a plan. Understanding what your options are, the best and worst case scenarios, how to deal with them, and formulating a plan allows us to regain control of our struggle. In my mind, having a plan is very anxiety relieving and is extremely important even early in the journey.

WHAT ABOUT SGF MAKES YOU THE MOST PROUD?
Dr. Brauer: The culture. Everything we do here is based on doing what is best for the patient. This idea is unfortunately getting harder and harder to find as the worlds of business and medicine intersect. Here, we are focused on practicing ethical, evidence-based medicine. This, along with best-in-class treatment options, transparency, and commitment to professionalism is what made me want to join this truly unique organization.

HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR PERSONALITY?
Dr. Brauer: Optimistic, passionate, social, and warm. I am a glass half full kind of gal. I always dream big. I feel strongly about my beliefs and fight for them. And I LOVE people.

More about The Buckhead-Piedmont Medical Team

Why did you become a doctor specializing in reproductive endocrinologist?

Dr Brahma: I have wanted to become a doctor for as long as I remember. My experiences volunteering at a hospital as a teenager solidified my dream to care for people for the rest of my life. In medical school, my interest in women’s health flourished. Medically, I was particularly interested in hormonal regulation and endocrinology. During residency, I was very moved by the close relationships I was able to develop with patients in the field of fertility. It is so exciting to practice medicine in a field that has gone through incredible scientific advancement over the past few decades. Helping couples achieve their dreams of parenthood is such a sincere passion of mine. I am also passionate about offering reproductive options for fertility preservation. I am grateful that all of these reasons led me to become a reproductive endocrinologist.

What is something about you that would surprise most people?

Dr. Brahma: I studied martial arts for many years, and I have a black belt in Tae Kwon Do.

What do you enjoy doing in your spare time?

Dr. Brahma: I love yoga, group fitness classes set to fun music, and running. As a family, we enjoy going on hikes and bike rides. The art of flower arranging fascinates me, and I attend classes or read books about it whenever I can.

Who inspires you?

Dr. Brahma: I draw inspiration from so many places. Our patients inspire me with their bravery, determination, and faith. My parents are an endless source of inspiration to me. By watching them, I learned about sincere dedication to family, hard work, and values.

What is your approach to patients who are struggling?

Dr. Brahma: My approach is to really listen to the details, empathize with the struggle, and help redirect our efforts towards our next step. I can relate personally to the struggle of infertility. One of the toughest parts of the fertility journey is losing control over something that matters so much in someone’s life. Optimism and strength to move forward often comes from addressing questions and fears. My goal is to empower patients with pertinent information to help make medical decisions together. I often tell patients to put some of their stress on my shoulders, and we will make the journey together.

How would you describe your personality?

Dr Brahma: I am warm, trustworthy, and optimistic. My family and friends often tease me about being over-organized. I love making “to do” lists and checking off the boxes!

SGF is proud to announce that Shayne Plosker, M.D., has been named a Top Doctor for Infertility by Tampa Magazine. This recognition is voted on by physician peers in various fields of medicine. This is the second year Dr. Plosker has been recognized as a top infertility doctor by Tampa Magazine.

Tampa Magazine mailed over 9,000 surveys to physicians in Hillsborough, Pinellas, and Pasco counties. They obtained the list of physicians from the Florida Department of Health, including medical doctors (M.D.s), D.O.s (osteopathic doctors), and podiatrists. Tampa Magazine asked physicians to nominate their peers in 64 separate medical specialties. Votes were tallied from the surveys and careful screening of doctors’ educational and professional experience was essential before final selection was made among those physicians most highly regarded by their peers.

“I am honored and humbled to be recognized by my peers as a top doctor in my field. I feel privileged to be part of a practice that puts compassion and excellent patient care first. SGF is incredibly innovative and has been a leader in all aspects of reproductive care for decades,” said Dr. Plosker.

When asked about his approach with patients, Dr. Plosker answered, “I strive to make personal connections with my patients beyond their medical needs because they are fellow human beings who are struggling. We all struggle with our personal challenges at times, and I try to be there as a supportive person in addition to being a physician. IVF has become an incredibly successful treatment option in its 40 years of existence, but not everyone achieves their goal, and we must take care of everyone. I try to offer alternative directions to patients who are struggling, and sometimes just be there compassionately to share their struggles with them. I don’t give up.”

Dr. Plosker joined Shady Grove Fertility in 2019 and sees patients in the Brandon, FL office. Prior to joining SGF Tampa Bay, Dr. Plosker was a professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of South Florida, Morsani College of Medicine in Tampa. While at USF, he served as Division Director of USF IVF and Reproductive Endocrinology, and Medical Director of IVF at Tampa General Hospital from 2006-2019.

Dr. Plosker earned his medical degree from the University of Western Ontario, where he also completed his residency training in Obstetrics and Gynecology. Following residency, he completed his fellowship in Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility at the University of California, San Francisco.

Dr. Plosker has published numerous peer-reviewed scientific manuscripts, book chapters, and review articles in many leading scientific journals, and has been invited to present and consult nationally and internationally. He is the recipient of multiple scientific and teaching awards as well as awards for exemplary patient care, such as the American Society for Reproductive Medicine Star Award, News and World Report Top 10% of Doctors Nationwide Distinction 2011-2014, and Best Doctors in America in Obstetrics and Gynecology 2017-2018.

Dr. Plosker is an active member of the American Society for Reproductive Medicine (ASRM), American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology, and the Society for Assisted Reproductive Technology. He is a fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Canada. His interests include assisted reproductive technologies, pre-implantation genetic testing (PGT), fertility preservation, and international infertility care.

SGF Tampa Bay currently has two locations, Tampa – Westshore and Brandon. The practice was formed in 2018 in affiliation with Women’s Care Florida (WCF), a premier provider of women’s health care throughout Central Florida. The SGF expansion to Florida provides more convenient access to highly specialized fertility care, including diagnostic testing and low- and high-tech treatment options such as intrauterine insemination (IUI), in vitro fertilization (IVF), donor egg treatment, egg freezing, oncofertility, and LGBTQ family building. SGF’s expansion into Tampa also expands its donor egg treatment and gestational carrier programs, creating access for egg donor recipients and for patients needing a gestational carrier traveling from South America. SGF recruits and prescreens (medically, psychologically, and genetically) all prospective, ready-to-cycle egg donors prior to listing them on the SGF donor registry.

SGF Tampa Bay accepts many insurances and also offers unique financial programs for self-pay patients such as their Shared Risk 100% Refund Guarantee for IVF and donor egg—in which patients take home a baby or receive a full refund—or their income-based Shared Help Program and Military Discount, to name a few. SGF provides an exclusive financing option through Fertility Finance with an easy loan process and competitive rates.

When you are faced with changing infertility treatment, you may be feeling some anxiety. Uncertainty over what to do and how to proceed can throw you into a feeling of disequilibrium and you may struggle to achieve a sense of balance again.

It’s important to remember that these are normal feelings. You may be coming from a place of trying for years on your own, from unsuccessful treatments, or a pregnancy loss, and experiencing a sense of grief and loss; therefore it is hard to feel excitement or place hope in the future and a chance of success with another path.

Additionally, starting or changing infertility treatments may involve more advanced options, like in vitro fertilization (IVF), or a different way to build a family, such as using an egg donor or sperm donor, and may require some emotional adjustment on your part.

Tips for Starting or Changing Infertility Treatment

Here are some tips to help if you’re faced with the decision to start a new or change your current infertility treatment plan:

Give yourself time to grieve.
Perhaps you recently had a pregnancy loss or your doctor has just told you that she doesn’t think your current treatment will be successful and that it is time to reconsider. You need time to process this information and pay attention to your emotions before choosing a new path. We all feel more comfortable when we have a plan, but changing infertility treatment just to fill the emptiness inside will not be helpful to you in the long run. Our feelings ultimately catch up with us if we don’t give ourselves the chance to deal with them at the time.

Sit down with your spouse, partner, or a trusted friend.
Evaluate the pros and cons of changing infertility treatment. What costs—financial, logistical, physical, and emotional—will be involved? Will it be a good fit for both you and your partner?

Set a timeframe for making the decision.
While you do want to give yourself time to grieve, you don’t want to be “stuck” with indecision. You can always reevaluate your timeframe depending on how your decision making process is going.

Enlist the help of your medical team, and seek counseling when needed.
Your medical team will always be there for you and willing to guide you in this process. Seeking counseling can also give you a safe, unrushed space to work through the important decision of changing your treatment plan and come to a resolution.

Keep in mind the saying that “this too shall pass.”
You will feel better and back in equilibrium once you have made a careful, well-thought-out decision.
