On Saturday, June 11, 2016, Shady Grove Fertility joined the Tinina Q. Cade Foundation to host the 11th annual Maryland Race for the Family at the Maryland Zoo. The Cade Foundation is a non-profit organization that promotes infertility awareness and provides grants to infertile couples in order to access treatment that otherwise would not have been possible.
Those who came were entertained by the 5K race, a magic show, toddler trot, Savannah’s Playground, and of course the long awaited grudge match between the Shady Grove Fertility physicians and embryologists. This year, the SGF physician team won the race, and the bragging rights.
We had over 715 walkers and runners join us for the race at the Baltimore Zoo and, with the help of many volunteers, fundraisers, and 15 sponsors, the event raised over $85,000 for the Cade Foundation!

SGF Patient Receives $10,000 towards Fertility Treatment at the Maryland Race for the Family

As always, the most anticipated part of the event was the announcement of the 2016 winner of the $10,000 raffle toward fertility treatment and medications. In support of  our patients, Shady Grove Fertility donates one treatment cycle, up to a $10,000 value, to be raffled off to one lucky couple, with medications donated by EMD Serono. “The Race for the Family is a great event that allows us to increase awareness, share hope, and connect families who are overcoming infertility. We are honored to partner with Shady Grove Fertility and are grateful for their generous support,” said Dr. Camille Hammond, CEO of the Cade Foundation.

This year, Jennifer Smith, a current patient of Dr. Jason Bromer from the SGF Frederick office, won the raffle. In a very touching story, her friend entered both Jennifer and her husband, Jeremy, into the raffle and they were beyond excited to hear that they were the winners!
Jennifer and Jeremy have been trying to conceive for 6 years but it wasn’t until about 2 years ago that they realized something more might be going on. They then knew it was time to see a specialist, and that’s how they found Shady Grove Fertility. Over the past 6 months at SGF they have gone through five intrauterine insemination (IUI) cycles and only have insurance coverage for one more cycle.

Jennifer shared, “With no more insurance coverage, after the next cycle we knew we were going to be done, so it’s been really hard on us. The only thing that has given me faith the past month was knowing that the Cade Race was coming up; I felt really happy and excited for the first time in months—it was the only thing that pulled me through this month. I had no idea we were going to win, but I just had faith. When I heard my best friend, ‘Hardesty’s,’ name called, I couldn’t believe it—I’ve never cried happy tears before. It was honestly the best feeling to have one of your best friends there and to hear his name called—it was amazing!”

“Thanks so much to Shady Grove Fertility and the Tinina Cade Foundation for this opportunity—even to know it was an opportunity before we won has helped so much. It gave me faith. And a special thanks to all of the nurses, doctors, team members, my race team “Giddy Up,” and my friends and family for supporting us, cheering for us, wishing us luck, and/or donating. To me they deserve credit because they helped make it happen—not only for us but for the Cade Foundation and all of the future winners,” Jennifer added.

Shady Grove Fertility would like to thank everyone who supported this year’s Maryland Race for the Family: the SGF physicians and staff, the runners and walkers, our corporate sponsors, and all of those who donated to this fantastic cause. For nearly a decade, Shady Grove Fertility and the Cade Foundation have worked together to raise more than $580,000 to help couples struggling with infertility.

June 7, 2016 by Shady Grove Fertility

Shady Grove Fertility is celebrating its 25th Anniversary as a practice and more than 40,000 babies born with a “Believe It’s Possible” campaign that aims to give current and new patients newfound reasons to believe in the power of what’s possible.  To commemorate this important milestone, Shady Grove Fertility is launching a “Believe It’s Possible” campaign to build hope for the 1 in 8 couples who are affected by infertility, and to serve as a reminder that there are now treatments available to help almost everyone conceive.

When the center first opened its doors in 1991, one Shady Grove Fertility baby was born approximately every 20 days. Today, 10 Shady Grove Fertility babies are born each day, every day—more than any other fertility center in the nation.

The History

The Shady Grove Fertility practice began in Rockville, MD, with two physicians, Arthur W. Sagoskin, M.D. and Michael J. Levy, M.D. Today, 34 reproductive endocrinologists, supported by a highly specialized team of 600 urologists, Ph.D. scientists, geneticists, and staff care for patients in 18 full-service offices and five satellite sites throughout Maryland, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and Washington, D.C., and the center continues to grow with three new locations in Virginia launching in the next 6 months.

“For 25 years, Shady Grove Fertility has been devoted to continually evolving and improving treatment outcomes to benefit the men and women looking to build their families through fertility treatment,” adds Mark Segal, Shady Grove Fertility’s CEO for nearly 2 decades. Recently, Shady Grove Fertility’s flagship embryology lab in Rockville, MD, was ranked as the highest volume lab for total assisted reproductive technology (ART) cycles, including in vitro fertilization (IVF) and donor egg treatment cycles. This data, pulled from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) preliminary 2014 Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART) Report, speaks to the expertise of the Shady Grove Fertility physicians and hundreds of clinical professionals devoted to the care of patients every day.

In 2014, SGF’s three state of the art embryology labs in Rockville, MD, Towson, MD, and Chesterbrook, PA, performed nearly 10,000 ART cycles—which equates to almost 5 percent of all ART cycles in the United States.

Endurance and a Persistent, Healthy Obsession

SGF also tops the list for the most fresh non-donor in vitro fertilization (IVF) cycles for women 40 and under, the most fresh donor cycles, the most frozen donor cycles, and—of key importance—the most live births from fresh non-donor IVF cycles, the most live births from fresh donor cycles, and the most live births from frozen donor cycles.

“When it comes to battling infertility, it takes the tireless dedication of our staff, the skillful expertise of our physicians, the compassion of our community, the trust of our referring OB/GYN physicians, and the courage and strength of our patients, all believing in the power of what’s possible to bring 40,000 babies and counting into this world,” says Dr. Levy, Shady Grove Fertility Co-founder, President, and Director of IVF. “It also takes endurance and a persistent healthy obsession with never settling for the status quo. We have consistently lived by the mantra to ‘always do what’s best for our patients’—this has served our patients and staff very well through the years,” adds Levy.

Believe It’s Possible

At the heart of the Believe It’s Possible campaign will be an opportunity for  Shady Grove Fertility staff, physicians, members of the community, former patients, and current patients to share, based on their observations and experience, their “reasons to believe” and why belief is possible with Shady Grove Fertility.

“Whether it’s because we designed exclusive financial programs that bring care within reach for more people, our success rates that are among the highest in the nation, or that we offer each patient truly individualized care, each person’s reason to believe is as unique and personal as their fertility journey,” says Patty Stull, Vice President of Strategic Development, former SGF patient, and mother of three.

“Treatment for infertility has come a long way over the past 25 years and become very effective and efficient in helping almost everyone conceive. Due to advancements, with proper and timely treatment, we can now overcome most diagnoses, including ovulation disorders, polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), blocked Fallopian tubes, unexplained infertility, recurrent miscarriages, and male factor infertility, to name only a few,” adds Dr. Sagoskin, Shady Grove Fertility co-founder.

Join the Movement #BelieveItsPossible

Throughout the remainder of its silver anniversary year, Shady Grove Fertility is encouraging its community to share their reasons to believe with others—whether that’s a picture of their Shady Grove Fertility baby or something along their journey that has served as a source of inspiration—by posting to Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, or their favorite social community using the hashtag #BelieveItsPossible.

To start your journey and add to the 40,000 babies born, simply schedule an appointment with one of our 34 physicians or call our New Patient Center at 1-877-971-7755.

SGF patients Kevin and Laura Jaye with Representative Tammy Duckworth at Advocacy Day 2016

On May 11th, more than 20 Shady Grove Fertility physicians, staff, and patients joined more than 200 infertility advocates at RESOLVE’s Advocacy Day 2016 to lobby on Capitol Hill. The collective mission was to raise awareness among members of Congress of the scope of infertility across the country and the physical, emotional, and financial impact of the disease. The group specifically asked for more support on several pieces of pending legislation, emphasizing that, with Congressional support, more families will have access to the care they need.

SGF has supported Advocacy Day for several years, but this year was a particularly special year. We had the opportunity to hear from Congresswoman Tammy Duckworth, U.S. House of Representatives, 8th District, Illinois, a woman who served in the military, and who later, injured during service, struggled to conceive. This was especially relevant as one of this year’s main initiatives was to support a new bill designed to provide fun
ding to veterans (whose service wounds impaired their reproductive ability) in need of in vitro fertilization (IVF) treatment.

In addition, SGF was able to celebrate Lauren and Kevin Jaye, SGF patients who were honored with the RESOLVE Infertility Hero Award. The Jayes have fought and overcome infertility caused by an injury Kevin received while serving in the military. They have been very public about their experiences, including sharing story with CBS News.

Gaining Support for Veterans, Adoption, and the National Action Plan on Infertility

All of the nearly 220 advocates asked Congress to support legislation to allow veterans and other military personnel to obtain infertility and family building resources. In addition, we asked for support of bills that will improve the Adoption Tax Credit so that more people can afford to build their family through adoption and (in collaboration with Resolve) advance the goals of the National Action Plan on Infertility.

As a Visionary Partner of RESOLVE: the National Infertility Association and sponsor of Advocacy Day 2016, SGF asked members of Congress to support four important issues this year that affect the infertility community, including:

  • Women Veterans and Families Health Services Act that allows veterans to obtain IVF, adoption assistance, and other family-building benefits
  • The Veterans Amendment to the Senate Appropriations Mil-Con Bill, which will provide funding for the VA to offer IVF to veterans for 2 years
  • The Adoption Tax Credit Refundability Act, which restores refundability so that families who need the credit the most will receive it
  • Goals of the National Action Plan on Infertility

Congresswoman Tammy Duckworth Discusses Veteran Access to Infertility Treatment at Advocacy Day 2016

Representative Duckworth speaking at Advocacy Day 2016

RESOLVE’s Advocacy Day 2016 began at the National Press Club, where Congresswoman Tammy Duckworth spoke about her 23 years in the military and how she battled for her positions throughout her military career, as well as how she later had to battle for the ability to have a child. On her path to parenthood, she quickly learned how limited availability of infertility treatment is for veterans.

Duckworth explained that, “in that highly competitive world, you don’t want to take any time off and as a young woman I had my mind set on battalion command someday,” which, as Duckworth explained, was a long road that coincided with her prime years, late 20s to mid-30s, to start a family.

In 2004, Duckworth was deployed to Iraq as a Black Hawk helicopter pilot for the Illinois Army National Guard. She was one of the first Army women to fly combat missions during Operation Iraqi Freedom until her helicopter was hit. Duckworth lost her legs and partial use of her right arm.

After 18 months of recovery, at the age of 38, she could finally start a family with her husband. She and her husband tried on their own for a year; however, since the Veteran Affairs hospital didn’t offer fertility treatment, she was referred to a reproductive specialist. The specialist told her to give up trying to conceive due to her age, she was just 41.

“In this most personal and private of moments, where I felt the most vulnerable, and least knowledgeable…I believed her. And she showed me the charts and the research…And so I went home and I gave up.”

Duckworth said she wouldn’t have changed a thing about her service in the military, but her number one regret was that she would never have the chance to carry her own child. A year later Duckworth attended a Women in Leadership event, and was connected with a specialist who told her it was possible, that she did have options. This specialist changed her life and helped her become pregnant with her daughter who she gave birth to in 2014.

Her speech conveyed how we must advocate to lift fertility treatment restrictions at Veteran Affairs Hospitals and increase insurance coverage for veterans who have sustained devastating reproductive injuries. And if infertility treatment isn’t an option, that there needs to be wider coverage for adoption, health access, and childcare access.

Shady Grove Fertility Patients, Kevin and Lauren Jaye Receive Hero Award at Advocacy Day 2016

SGF patients, Kevin Jaye and his wife, Lauren, who are expecting their first child in a couple of months, were honored at Advocacy Day 2016 for their commitment to change a law restricting the Department of Veteran Affairs from covering their treatment cost. They received the Hero Award, which recognizes the special efforts of people in the infertility community. During Advocacy Day, the Jayes, along with both of their parents, met with countless representatives and senators, advocating for change and sharing their personal story. Watch the Jayes on CBS News.

To be involved with Advocacy Day 2016, it isn’t too late to send letters to your Representatives and Senators to advocate for change. Click to find letter templates.
