Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS)

December 18, 2023 by

Kris and I married very quickly at age 22 after only knowing each other for only a year and a half. We knew right away we wanted kids. We didn’t prevent anything from happening and thought perfect timing, it would happen quickly. We couldn’t understand why things weren’t “normal.” We knew my periods were all over the place, and when they did come were very heavy and unpredictable.

We finally had a VERY faint positive pregnancy test after about 2.5 years of us trying on our own, went to my local clinic and was told it was chemical. At that point, I began to work with the OB/GYN in the clinic. At that point, we found out I had Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) and insulin resistant.

Nothing worked after 6 months. Not clomid, not letrozole, temperature charts or ovulation tests. Switched doctors, same exact thing. Everyone said I’m the poster child for what clomid was made for.  Well, we still had nothing over a year and half later. All I had was moodiness, hot flashes, lack of sanity and negative pregnancy tests to show for it. I never ovulated even with all the medications.

Kris joined the military in 2018, and we began to try things on our own and visit the OB/GYN in the process periodically. Kris was in and out of training, so we didn’t have a regular “home” for well over a year. We finally met a doctor around year 5 who would refer us out and not keep us, and this happened to be at the first permanent base we were stationed at. The doctor had been through infertility treatments himself (extremely empathetic) and told us it was time to be referred and finally get some answers. At this point, we were tired, angry, and hopeless. We didn’t think we would ever be parents.

Finding fertility care at SGF Colorado

I researched on social media groups with other military spouses who had gone through infertility, and several had recommended Dr. Alex Polotsky.

We decided to send the referral to him. One of our first meetings, I remember bawling my eyes out how I just wanted one kid at this point, and he said I was going to walk out with a baby. Within 8 months at the height of COVID (delaying treatment 2-3 months), I was pregnant. We had a healthy beautiful 8.5lb boy at 37 weeks, named Wolfgang August. It was a family name from my German side I’ve waited a near decade to use.

Trying for a sibling

Once little man turned a year old, we wanted to use one of our remaining embryos from our original egg retrieval in July 2020. With pre-testing for our frozen embryo transfer (FET), it was discovered I had several polyps that needed to be removed. It took two polyp removal surgeries, and we took a rest cycle. I never thought the day would come for a FET since things have never been easy for us throughout this entire journey.

We transferred in November of 2022, and unfortunately, it failed. Dr. Polotsky personally called us, offered his condolences, and talked us through what options we had. Words can’t describe how low and depressed I was seeing another pregnancy fail, even with a tested embryo. I felt a lot of guilt during this time as well … due to already having a child and knowing many peers without one yet whom I grown close to in the many years in the infertility community. After much discussion, and both of us still actively grieving, we decided to immediately go into the next cycle and do another FET.

In December 2022, we transferred our last remaining normal embryo. It happened to also be our only female embryo. On New Year’s Day I tested at home since the clinic was closed at 9 days post transfer. We saw a positive pregnancy test. A few days later, our beta confirmed the pregnancy.

Rosalind Florence was born in August 2023. She was healthy and born at 38 weeks. Wolfgang now has a sibling, and our family is complete.

Two beautiful miracles

I never in my wildest dreams thought I’d ever be a mother after so many years of looking at blank single-line pregnancy tests and failed fertility treatments … and here I am with two beautiful miracles.

Never give up hope. I still tear up looking at our babies, I sincerely thought we would never have them. Trust your treatment team. They truly are miracle workers and know what they are doing.

Being a mother was something that I had dreamed about since I was a little girl. I was diagnosed with PCOS in 2014 when I was 29. I knew becoming a mom could be difficult for me.

When I finally met my wife, I told her that I was on a journey to become a mom. I was already 34 and knew I was entering into the advanced maternal age category. She was already the mom to a 9 year old and older than me so for her, this meant starting over. She agreed and we married in 2021 after 2 years together.

Dreams of motherhood

We began interviewing fertility clinics at the end of 2019 and found our way to Shady Grove Fertility. After meeting with Dr. Martin, we knew he was our doctor and just loved and respected him immediately. I knew he could help my dream of motherhood come true.

I had a scary setback at the beginning of 2020 with some pre-cancerous cervical cells that required surgery and put our fertility treatments on hold. Then Covid happened.

A formidable team

Finally, in June of 2020, we were able to begin treatments, but I had to go in alone due to restrictions. That year I went through 3 IUIs that resulted in chemical pregnancies and subsequent losses. Dr. Martin and his nurse Karina are a formidable team. We had an appointment to go over the Shared Risk 100% Refund program for in vitro fertilization (IVF). I immediately agreed and we had our egg retrieval in November.

In 2021, we moved to New England and had 2 frozen embryo transfers (FETs) that resulted in losses before my third FET when I conceived my miracle girl in October 2021.

Luckily by then, my wife was able to go in with me for the transfers. I delivered our daughter on June 28, 2022, at St. Francis Hospital in Hartford, Connecticut. Without the perseverance of Dr. Martin, Karina, and their team at SGF, there is no way my daughter Abigail would be here.

A rainbow after the storm

She is my miracle, a rainbow after the storm, and the complete love of my life. Thank you Dr. Martin, Karina, and team! You never gave up on us. You kept encouraging us every step of the way even when I felt like I couldn’t do it anymore. You have made my dreams come true.

Your miracle is waiting for you

To current and future patients, do not give up. Your miracle is waiting for you. Your journey will take many twists and turns and may not look like what you thought it should but trust me, it is so worth it in the end. Abigail was so very worth the wait and wait and wait.

My husband and I married in 2018 after only dating for 6 months! (When ya know, ya know).

I told my husband very early in the relationship I was diagnosed with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) in my early twenties, and it may be hard for us to conceive.

I had irregular periods throughout my teens and was put on birth control to regulate my cycles. After stopping birth control, I’d go months, even years without periods. I also struggle with acne and facial hair, so I requested blood work and that’s when I was diagnosed with PCOS.

Getting started at SGF

After being married a little over year and trying on our own with no luck we decided to reach out to Shady Grove Fertility. We started in SGF’s Fredericksburg, Virginia, location. After all the testing and having to get consent from fetal maternal medicine due to my chronic kidney disease, we were ready for treatment. And then Covid happened . . . the Fredericksburg location temporarily closed, and they told us we had to go to the Fairfax location, which was two hours away from our home.

The doctor’s plan of action was Clomid with intrauterine insemination (IUI). The Clomid made me hyper ovulate, and we had to cancel the cycle.

We decided to try again this time with Femara. My body responded much better to this medicine but unfortunately the IUI failed.

So, we tried again. Using Femara again everything looked good on my end, but my husband’s count was low this time. The nurse called us into the consult room and told us we had a 13% chance of it working and asked if we wanted to proceed. We decided to go forward, and it failed.

After too many heartbreaks, traveling for treatment, and in the height of Covid, we decided to take a break.

Moving forward with a new plan

While at work, a client told me Dr. Anish Shah at SGF’s Richmond, Virginia, location was amazing and highly recommended him. The next day I called and requested a consult with him. I immediately felt safe putting our care in his hands. In 2022, we decided to move forward with in vitro fertilization (IVF).

At our egg retrieval, they retrieved 40 eggs! And out of the 40, 20 were fertilized! Our transfer went smoothly, and we decided to go on vacation during the two-week wait.

I knew I was pregnant! I could smell EVERYTHING!!!

The day after we returned home I had my blood test and I was right, we were pregnant! We were so happy. But unfortunately, that pregnancy ended at 5.5 weeks in a miscarriage.

Dr. Shah and his nurses were so compassionate and reassured me a million times it was nothing I did wrong.

Our life is complete

After a few months, my human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) finally went back to normal, and we tried again. We were cautiously optimistic. And it worked . . . I couldn’t believe it — I took a million pregnancy tests!

Pregnancy after loss was hard. My anxiety was at an all-time high. I joined support groups through Shady Grove Fertility, and they were so helpful! Week after week my anxiety eased and being high risk, I was getting ultrasounds every month and that gave me some comfort.

On May 3, 2023, we welcomed our baby girl, Francesca Faith, into the world! She’s perfect. And we couldn’t be happier. With her and our three fur babies, our life is complete! We will forever be grateful to Dr. Shah, his nurse Jenn, and Shady Grove Fertility!

Advice for anyone going through this journey

Know that you’re not alone. I felt embarrassed and less of a woman because I couldn’t conceive on my own, but the more I talked about it, the more I found there are so many others going through the same difficult journey.

Know your partner is going through this with you. Don’t be afraid to reach out for help, and know it’s okay to take breaks.

Life before trying to conceive was easygoing. My husband works in sales, and I work in physical therapy. We have an orange cat named Nemo who we love dearly! My husband and I met in college in 2013 and started dating our senior year in 2015. We got married in 2020.

Finding a fertility care team at Shady Grove Fertility

After several months of trying to conceive on our own without success, I had a gut feeling something was wrong. My period cycles were long 38-40 days, some months I wouldn’t get a period.

After reading and hearing good reviews, we turned to Shady Grove Fertility (SGF) for help. After our initial fertility testing, Dr. Tara Budinetz diagnosed me with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) and a thin uterine lining.

Experiencing challenges before success

We decided to move forward with intrauterine insemination (IUI). After two failed IUIs, we started the in vitro fertilization (IVF) process. IVF was the hardest thing I personally have ever gone through. It was scary the day I got all my medications, I felt very overwhelmed. When we finally got to egg retrieval, we were happy to get 15 eggs. From there, 7 matured.

We did genetic testing after our egg retrieval to find only 3 of our embryos came back normal out of 7. Dr. B told us this could have been playing a factor in our inability to conceive due to abnormal eggs.

When we finally started prepping for our transfer cycle, I could not get my lining above a 5.7 and continued to have cancelled cycles which left me heart broken. With the wonderful help from Dr. Budinetz, we were finally able to make it to a trilaminar 6.2 which is still considered thin, but she was confident, and we went ahead with the transfer anyway.

Meeting our miracle

We were successful with the first transfer!

My pregnancy was overall pretty good. I had terrible acid reflux the entire pregnancy, which was my biggest complaint.

My journey was filled with disappointment and tears for months and months. However, with the help from Shady Grove Fertility, and specifically Dr. Budinetz, we were able to finally have our wonderful baby boy Connor.

Having our baby boy has changed our lives in so many ways I never could have ever imagined (for the better). Even on nights we don’t sleep or days he is super fussy, we enjoy every second because of the journey we had to go through to get to him.

I have had a lot of people reach out to me who are going through similar experiences and my best advice is to trust the process and try your best to remain calm. Going through IVF was the hardest thing I’ve ever done in my life, but I would do it a million times over for my son. The SGF care team never failed to reassure me that this journey would happen for me when I was having rough days and would cry. We maintained hope by the reassurance from our doctor and nurses at SGF. We were willing to keep going and do whatever possible to get our miracle!

We will be back to Shady Grove Fertility for our second child in the future!

Life before baby was always spent together! We loved to travel when we could — mainly places in Texas. We loved checking out museums or walking around shops in new towns we had never been to before. We enjoyed going on river trips with friends. We loved going to see a new movie in theaters! We also enjoy trying new restaurants anytime we get the chance!

My husband and I got married in 2011 and shortly after, we moved to Germany where my husband was being stationed in the Army. During our first year there we did not try for kids, because we did not want to have them while living overseas.

We decided to start trying to conceive our last year there. Nothing happened. Not thinking anything of it we continued to try. We moved back to the states in 2014 and continued trying for two years while living in Louisiana. But still no luck.

Finding fertility care with SGF Houston and Dr. O’Hern

By the time we moved back to Houston in 2016 and got settled, we decided to find a fertility clinic to find out why I wasn’t getting pregnant. In 2017, I found Dr. O’Hern on Google and something in my gut told me I should go with her.

My first appointment I was anxious. I was afraid to hear one of my worst fears, that I would never be able to have kids. But after meeting Dr O’Hern — who is the kindest soul I know — and running a bunch of tests, scans, and testing my husband, all we found was I had polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS).

Relieved, we wanted to start right away with the easiest option, timed intercourse. But unfortunately, it failed. So, we tried again the following month. Again, another fail.

We kept trying the rest of the year not wanting to give up! Finally, by the end of the year I was told I had unexplained infertility. Dr. O’Hern was not sure as to why I was unable to get pregnant.

Starting a new treatment plan

By 2018 she suggested we try intrauterine insemination (IUI). But after two failed attempts and more months of timed intercourse with no luck, I decided my body and mind needed a break.

By the time 2020 arrived, I had lost a bunch of weight and I thought we could maybe try again. I went back to Dr. O’Hern, and we wanted to start with timed intercourse again.

And in July, I finally got the news I have always dreamed of hearing! But after only two days of pure bliss, when I went back to get some blood work, my hCG numbers had not risen that much and it was declared a chemical pregnancy.

Heartbreak after heartbreak

We were completely devastated but also more hopeful than we ever had been before! So, we tried again in September. And by October we were pregnant again! My numbers were extremely high but Dr. O’Hern was concerned because the numbers weren’t rising at the rate they should have been. After a couple of days, I went back in to find out I was having an ectopic pregnancy.

We had to terminate the pregnancy and at that point I was ready to throw in the towel. Heartbreak after heartbreak was just leaving me with no hope.

Finding the right treatment plan

I decided to hold off on trying again for a while, until I received a phone call in January of 2021 that seriously changed our lives forever! Dr. O’Hern believed it was possible for us to get pregnant, so she put in a recommendation for the IVF study at the Webster location and they called to tell us we had been selected to try the study! This was such a relief because we had been wanting to do IVF, but our insurance unfortunately didn’t cover it and we couldn’t pay out of pocket!

After several months of paperwork, tests, and trying to be patient, we finally started the journey. On egg retrieval day they retrieved 24 eggs! Of those 24 only nine were worth keeping! When the day for the embryo transfer came my body was so exhausted that the embryo did not stick.

After some more testing, Dr. O’Hern saw that six embryos had the highest chance of survival and so we froze them! After a month of rest and a month of being on birth control we were ready to try once again!

Welcoming Jameson

On July 13, 2021, we transferred our highest-numbered embryo and on July 27 at 10:30 am I received a phone call that truly changed our lives forever! We were finally pregnant!! My hCG levels were high and rising rapidly and we were so grateful!

On March 19, 2022, at 9:30 pm we welcomed a strong, healthy baby boy! Jameson Lee. He is hands down our greatest blessing and it’s all thanks to our wonderful doctor! She never gave up on us and we will be forever thankful for her!

Something I learned along the way

Something I’ve learned about myself through my fertility journey is I never knew how strong I truly am. No, I don’t mean physically strong but mind over matter.

So many times, I wanted to give up, we just kept running into one dead end after another after another! I felt physically done all the time!

But I knew there was a goal and that goal was a baby!

I had to remind myself I am supposed to be a mother and there was nothing that was going to stop me from doing that! I pushed myself to keep going even after negative tests and failed IUI’s and two D&C surgeries and two miscarriages.

My heart was breaking into so many pieces at that point but with the support of my husband and never giving up, I made it through all those rough nine years of heartbreak!

Advice for other fertility warriors

Be patient.

I know, I know. This is a phrase most people going through infertility (me included) hate hearing! Especially when you’re getting no good news. But with the right doctor, the right medicine, and the right timing everything can start to fall into place. You just have to be patient.

Something else that is highly needed during this time in your life when you feel you have no answers is to have the best support system out there! For me, it was my husband, my sister, and a few close friends. Without them, I don’t know if I would have or could have kept going.

On my hardest days, they were there. On my saddest days, they were there to lean on and they let me cry. On the happiest days, they were always the first to call! All you need is one person!

My husband and I always knew that we wanted to have children. I was diagnosed with Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) around 2013 and knew that it may affect my fertility or ability to get pregnant, but we weren’t prepared for the infertility journey we were going to face. Prior to trying to conceive and having a child, we focused our time on travel, going to concerts and events, and exploring NYC.

Working with our physician

We started trying to conceive as soon as we were married in 2020 during the pandemic. We came to Shady Grove Fertility after a referral from our OB/GYN. We were struggling to conceive and wanted to test for any issues and seek help with our pregnancy journey. Dr. Anate Brauer and the whole team were incredibly kind and helpful and made us feel heard.

We did some basic testing and were thrilled to find we were pregnant, maybe we wouldn’t need SGF services after all!

Unfortunately, after close monitoring, we lost that first pregnancy in miscarriage, and the SGF Care Team were very supportive during that difficult time.

Finding the right treatment

We went on for further testing and tried intrauterine insemination (IUI) which was successful but ended in miscarriage, and one other naturally conceived miscarriage before we moved to in vitro fertilization (IVF).

We went through the egg retrieval and IVF process, and it was very convenient given the SGF’s Manhattan location and times for blood work/testing which did make the process much easier. With IVF we could test embryos prior to implantation, which would give us some peace of mind (as well as hormonal support) given our history of miscarriage. The entire IVF process, while long and with many steps, was overall easy to follow and helped us feel a sense of control over our fertility journey. The SGF Care Team explained the steps and process every bit of the way and were great resources for our questions. We were motivated to eventually hold a baby in our arms, and we were confident we could get there with SGF’s help one way or another.

Finding incredible support and success

We were lucky and our first frozen embryo transfer (FET) was successful, and Dr. Brauer was extremely attentive. We were monitored very closely which was reassuring given our previous history.

Throughout our infertility journey, we had incredible support from our friends and family. We were very open about our miscarriages and infertility treatments, and hearing similar stories, words of encouragement, and love from friends near and far really kept us going.

Welcoming a healthy and happy baby girl

While I had a few complications during my pregnancy (subchorionic hematoma, morning sickness the entire pregnancy, high blood pressure), overall it was not a bad experience. While we had some anxiety at the beginning that we might not be able to sustain the pregnancy, we were lucky to have a relatively smooth pregnancy and delivery.

It was the most amazing feeling to hold our baby after our long journey. We started trying to conceive in September 2020, we had miscarriages in July 2021, January 2022, and February 2022, and we went through the egg retrieval and IVF process from March through May 2022. Holding our little girl in January 2023 was a long-awaited joy! We are so grateful to have her in our life.

Leni Elise is almost three weeks old and is healthy and happy. She is becoming more alert, loves to snuggle in our laps and eat, and frequently naps (which is great for Mom and Dad to grab a nap too!).

What we learned throughout the journey

I learned that my relationship with my husband is stronger than I could have ever imagined. We had to lean on and support one another, throughout the entire process and pregnancy. We had to support one another through the grief of our losses, while still maintaining hope for the future. There is no way I would have been able to go through this process without my husband. That said, I also surprised myself with my own strength and resilience, both mentally and physically. Finally, I learned that so many others suffer from pregnancy loss and infertility. Many people do not talk about it due to grief, shame, sadness or other feelings, but you are not alone in having difficulty getting or staying pregnant.  Unfortunately, it is common, but it doesn’t make it any easier to handle or less devastating.

Hope, strength, and joy

It’s important to lean on your support systems and be gentle with yourself when fighting your infertility battles. You may feel depression, grief, anger, frustration, and many other negative or complicated feelings, but you will also feel hope, strength, and joy. It can be difficult to keep going and stay optimistic as the process can be long and arduous, but it was worth every challenge to hold my baby girl in my arms and grow our family.
