New York, NY – Until last week, New York State remained one of only three states in the U.S. that banned the use of GC. On April 2, a key piece of legislation, the Child-Parent Security Act, was passed, establishing and protecting the rights of the intended parents. Shady Grove Fertility (SGF), home to more than 85,000 babies born and one of the largest GC programs in the nation, applauds this change, calling it “long overdue.”

Gestational surrogacy—which involves a woman other than the biological or intended parent carrying the pregnancy—is not just an option, it’s the only option to start or grow a family for millions of New Yorkers who face infertility; others whose cancer, previous trauma, or genetic disease has affected their reproductive capabilities; and the LGBTQ community who desire to start a family.

“In these, some of the darkest times New York has seen, I am so completely overjoyed at this glimmer of light and hope for our patients. These are patients who have undergone the most horrific of circumstances. Couples with previous traumatic birth, ruptured uterus, pregnancy loss, cancer, absent uterus (MRKH syndrome), severe renal disease, uterine cancer, post-partum hemorrhage that required a hysterectomy, to name a few. Now these warriors, already mourning the loss of their ability to carry a pregnancy, at least have the opportunity to build a family in their home state,” said Anate Brauer, M.D., Director of IVF at SGF New York in Manhattan.

“Patients with uterine factor such as fibroids, Asherman’s syndrome, prior hysterectomy, different genetic diseases, recurrent miscarriages, certain types of cancer, and same-sex male couples are not able to carry a pregnancy. SGF excels in creating programs that allow these patients and others to become parents,” explains Tomer Singer, M.D., MBA, Medical Director of SGF New York in Manhattan.

“SGF is committed to providing both parties—intended parents and GCs—with the best personalized care in order to help many achieve the dream of parenthood,” adds Singer.

While SGF does not recruit their own GCs, SGF has vast experience working with intended parents and GCs alike, high success rates, and is also home to one of the only 100% refund programs for IVF or donor egg treatment in the nation— intended parents either take home a baby or receive their money back.
