Robert Edwards, a leader and pioneer in the field of reproductive medicine has passed away at the age of 87. The University of Cambridge, where Edwards was a profession, said he passed away in his sleep.

Edwards, along with Dr. Patrick Steptoe, researched and developed in vitro fertilization (IVF). Edwards began his research in 1955 and in 1968 had the first human egg to be fertilized in a laboratory setting.  Shortly after, he began his work with Dr. Steptoe.  While controversial, the two continued with their work and in 1978, celebrated the birth of the world’s first IVF baby, Louise Brown. Brown will be turning 35 this year and has been quoted as saying, “I have always regarded Robert Edwards as like a grandfather to me.”

In 2010, Robert Edwards was awarded the Nobel Prize in Medicine for the development of IVF. A year later, Queen Elizabeth II knighted Edwards “for services to human reproductive biology.”

The field of medicine that has launched since their research has inspired so many. “IVF is such a new field of medicine, which was opened up by Edwards. He changed the world for both couples and physicians,” said Shady Grove Fertility’s Dr. Joseph Doyle. “He is the root of my career inspiration.”

Edwards’s legacy lives on, and the world recently welcomed the 5 millionth IVF baby. “5,000,000 children because of his groundbreaking work. Edwards was the father of IVF,” commented Jim Graham, Embryology Laboratory Director at Shady Grove Fertility.

National Doctor’s Day with Shady Grove Fertility

Shady Grove Fertility is proud to have the largest team of Reproductive Endocrinologists working together to serve patients. Each year, we celebrate National Doctor’s Day to recognize the efforts put forth by the physicians to help turn each patient’s dream of parenthood into a reality.

The Shady Grove Fertility team has grown in the last year, welcoming five new physicians.

After spending a lot of time during my residency training here, I “came home” to Shady Grove Fertility and the Washington, DC area just over a year ago.  I left a practice in Monmouth County, New Jersey – the real Jersey Shore! – where I had been affiliated with another infertility practice. I had a different focus there, spending almost as much time in the operating room performing robotic and laparoscopic surgery as I did in the IVF center. But things just “clicked” the second I arrived in Frederick, where I now see patients.  I am grateful every day that I have truly found passion in my career, and I am honored and inspired every day to be part of the Shady Grove family.

Why did you become a doctor? My father is a pediatrician and the practice of medicine was always in our home. He works very hard, and growing up I always heard him on the phone with patients. He served as a role model when becoming an adult. So my connection to medicine is very connected to my family life at home.

Who inspires you? I am inspired by my patients’ strength. I am inspired by my kids’ thirst for knowledge, love and experience. I am inspired by my medical school classmates. I am regularly amazed at how diverse they are and how much they have accomplished. I am inspired by the nursing staff at Shady Grove Fertility who are on the front line of patient care and are always working for perfection.

I am inspired by my best friend, a lawyer on Capitol Hill.   He is full of energy and enthusiasm and always looking for the next meaningful life experience.  I think he is acutely aware that we only live once and that we need to make the most of every single day.

What’s on your bucket list? I want to lie on a beach in Tahiti, dive on the Great Barrier Reef and go on Safari in Africa.

What are your hobbies? I enjoy woodworking, yoga, and spinning.

What about you would most surprise people? I come from a big family; I am the oldest of 6. When my wife and I tried to expand our family we turned to treatment and we now have twins from an injectable cycle. At the time, no one told me there was a 20% risk of twins.  It makes me acutely sensitive to patients that say “I’m okay with twins”.

What about SGF makes you the most proud? I think we do an amazing job at providing quality, evidence-based care, with attention to service and personalized to a patient’s needs.

Why did you become a doctor? Becoming a doctor and caring for patients was always a goal of mine. My father was very focused on which professions we were to choose, becoming a doctor I felt was the best fit for me and my personality.  I have a mathematical mind and always play with numbers, review the numbers, and review them again!

Who is on your iPod? I don’t have an iPod, but if I did, it would probably have U2, Andrew Lloyd Weber, and Barbara Streisand.

What’s on your bucket list? I would love to take a Chinese or an Alaskan cruise.
What are your hobbies? I play tennis about 4 times per week and enjoy doing anything that keeps one physically fit.

What about you would most surprise people? I am the youngest of 9 children. I was an Olympic athlete and went to the 1972 Munich Olympics.

Any pearls of wisdom? Always do your best each and every time. You are not competing with anyone else, just yourself and doing it well. Life is an active process.

What about Shady Grove Fertility makes you the most proud? There is an abundance of knowledge at Shady Grove Fertility. The practice is so very committed to patients and their success in building a family. I would have never imagined how many different options could be available to patients.  I am very proud to bring these options to our patients in Pennsylvania.

Joseph Doyle, MD

What are you hobbies?  For the mind – reading, sports, and a nice hot sauna.  For the body – triathlons, skiing, gardening, and canoeing (pretty much anything outside).  For the soul – a big dinner party with family, friends, and laughter.

What was your favorite vacation?  Traveling through southern Italy was breathtaking.  It was a perfect combination of history, food, beauty, and life.  You get pulled right into it when you’re there, and together with my wife it was a joy to join right in.

Why did you become a doctor?  When I was growing up, I volunteered as a boy scout at the local hospital and during the summer at a camp for children with diabetes.  It all started with small little roles, but more and more, it left me with a sense of fulfillment and meaning, which I was curious to explore further.  The opportunities to contribute and make a difference in medicine abound.  This naturally led to becoming a physician, and growing through each new step, the feeling of purpose and meaning after a day of work has never left.  Happily, I know with what I do now, it will always stay that way.

What about SGF makes you the most proud?  The way to a happy, healthy family can be confusing, frustrating, and sometimes even frightening, and I am proud of the way we guide our patients through this.  It is a privilege to work with a couple to build a family in the right way for them.  I have seen a number of fertility centers, and I found no comparison to Shady Grove Fertility.  I couldn’t wait to join – I am proud to work here every day, and know I am offering the very best that there is to my patients.  Making important contributions to my patients and the field is very important to me.  I truly believe there isn’t a better place I could do this than Shady Grove.

What’s on your bucket list?  Running the Marine Corps Marathon is next!

Why did you become a doctor? I have always been science-minded.  It was my favorite subject in school growing up.  Once I decided to go to medical school, I knew immediately that I wanted to work with women’s health issues and that becoming an OB/GYN was the right fit for me.  I decided to sub-specialize in reproductive endocrinology because I believe it is the most rewarding area in our field.  I love the complexity of the endocrine system and working with patients to help them have families.

Who inspired you?  My mother is my inspiration; she makes everyone feel like they are special.  Growing up, our house was the house where all the kids in the neighborhood hung out.  My mom would take anyone in for a meal or for the holidays when I came home from school.  She is accepting, loving, and interested in learning more about people.

What’s on your bucket list?  I would like to sail around the world with my husband.

Who’s on your iPod?  Alice Russell, Quantic Soul, Stereolab, Bittersweet, Koop

What are your hobbies?  Racing sailboats, traveling, yoga

What about you would most surprise people?  One summer I packed a backpack, bought a plane ticket to Lima, Peru and traveled for 8 weeks by myself through South America.

Any pearls of wisdom?  There are many ways to have a family.  If that is your goal it will happen.

What about Shady Grove Fertility makes you most proud? The number of people that we’ve helped achieve their goals of parenthood.  There is also a great sense of camaraderie amongst the physicians and staff.  I always feel like I have someone to bounce ideas off of, to support me with complicated medical issues, and to help me when things get busy.

Preconception – Preparing Your Body for a Healthy Pregnancy

SGF Nurse

by Dr. Gilbert L. Mottla
Prepare Your Body for Conception
It’s important to prepare your body for conception, one way to do this is to achieve an optimal weight through exercise and a healthy diet. Obesity and borderline obesity convey many risks to both mother and baby which can be reduced or eliminated with weight loss. Studies show that, losing as little as 5% of your body weight may increase your chances of pregnancy. Underweight individuals also are predisposed to risk factors which can be remedied by proper nutrition and achieving an optimal weight.

Kicking Bad Habits
Quitting smoking and certain risk behaviors such as excessive drinking and use of illegal substances are critical to both minimizing your chances of miscarriage, and promoting a healthy pregnancy over nine months of gestation.

Reducing Stress
Reducing stress is desirable while trying to conceive. Whether it’s sharing your experiences with others in a group setting, or seeking acupuncture and other complementary therapies, finding a way to reduce stress will increase your likelihood of continuing your course of treatment to promote a healthy pregnancy.
Request information about complementary therapies for fertility.

Pregnancy-Approved Medications
Review your current medications with your physician to ensure both proper dosages and whether your medications are safe to take in pregnancy. There may be alternatives to current medications which are safe during pregnancy and others should be transitioned to, prior to conception.

Know Your Medical History
It is important to review one’s own medical history including past immunizations. Patients are encouraged to be up-to-date with immunizations for such conditions as influenza, chicken pox, measles, mumps and rubella to name a few.
More on Immunization & Fertility Treatment.

Undiagnosed and Untreated Medical Conditions
There are a number of medical conditions which may negatively affect pregnancy, including borderline diabetes and a low functioning thyroid gland. It is important to have a physical examination by either a gynecologist or your primary care physician before trying to conceive or beginning fertility treatments. Many conditions can be easily tested for and treated. The result of treatment can greatly improve one’s fertility, diminish the chance of miscarriage, and promote a healthy pregnancy.

If you would like to discuss your family building options or to schedule an appointment with Dr. Gilbert Mottla or another Shady Grove Fertility physicians, please speak with one of our New Patient Liaisons at 877-971-7755.

January 22, 2013 by Shady Grove Fertility

By now everyone has heard the news reports – we are currently facing a flu epidemic and those most at risk are the elderly, young children and pregnant women. So far this season, many pregnant women have been hospitalized and there are least 20 reported pediatric deaths associated with the flu. Shady Grove Fertility would like to encourage each patient to receive a flu shot. American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists says, “It is not too late to vaccinate. The College recommends that all pregnant women be immunized for seasonal influenza (flu) regardless of trimester”

Fertility Treatment & the Flu Shot

The flu shot is safe for men and women who are currently undergoing fertility treatment. “Shady Grove Fertility supports our infertile patients, both women and men, in obtaining a flu shot from their primary medical doctors.  In obtaining this flu vaccination, the risk of more severe flu illness is lessened.” Jeanne E. O’Brien, MD.

Pregnancy & the Flu Shot

Pregnant women are at higher risk of getting the flu due to changes in their immune system that makes them more sensitive. Serious problems can result from the flu for the unborn baby including premature labor and birth defects.

Patients who have already conceived are also encouraged to receive a vaccination. The flu shot is safe for pregnant women; however, it is advised not to use the nasal spray.

Currently pregnant women should be advised that the flu shot can offer some protection to their baby once he/she is born. In addition breastfeeding can also keep the baby healthy during the flu season if the mother has had the flu shot.

Flu Shot for Pregnant Women: FAQs

Stop the Spread of Germs

Here are some easy steps that can help protect you from the flu.

  • Wash your hands with soap and water or use alcohol-based hand rub.
  • Avoid touching your face.
  • Avoid close contact with sick people.
  • Get plenty of sleep and exercise.
  • Eat healthy food and drink lots of liquids.
  • Manage stress levels.
  • Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Throw the tissue in the trash after you use it.
  • If you are sick with flu-like symptoms, stay home for at least 24 hours after your fever is gone without the use of fever-reducing medicine.

If you are been trying to conceive without success and would like more information or to schedule an appointment with one of the Shady Grove Fertility physicians, please speak with one of our New Patient Liaisons at 877-971-7755.
