In the realm of fertility care, treatment options aren’t the only things that have been growing and developing over the past two decades. As treatment continues to advance, so does patient resources including psychiatrists and social workers specializing in caring for the emotional aspects of fertility care as well as support groups – both in person and online. The approach to fertility care has become more holistic for patients with more resources available today than ever before. This evolution is truly demonstrated in Bethesda Magazine’s article “Coming to Terms” found in the January/February 2014 publication.

“Coming to Terms” outlines the struggle of two women, each going through their own fertility journey. Julie Binderman and Joan Rabinor share their stories of triumph, taking the reader through their journey to inspiring endings. Each woman found a great need for physiological resources which turned the path of the rest of their lives to focus on helping others struggling with infertility. Read Julie and Joan’s story.

In a complimentary piece,  “Increasing the Odds”, featuring Shady Grove Fertility’s Joseph Doyle, M.D., explains one of the most commonly talked about forms of fertility treatment, in vitro fertilization (IVF). To create a better understanding of the fertility process and treatment options for men and women, Dr. Doyle, explains everything from cost and success rates to testing and treatment. This article addresses many of the questions that current and prospective patients alike have regarding fertility treatment. Read the full story.

Both articles work together to share a story of hope, with real life accounts of success and a better understanding of what medical options are available for patients looking to grow their families.

Does national data support the perception that infertility treatments have increased year over year? No, however according to Kurt Barnhart, president of the Society for Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility, infertility services are underutilized.

On Wednesday, January 22nd 2014, the National Center for Health Statistics found that increased awareness about the number of fertility treatment options has not increase the actual use of fertility services. Instead, the national numbers show declines for those seeking medical help to get pregnant or to prevent miscarriage. The study was conducted from 2006-2010 and findings are based on a survey of 22,682 men and women between the ages of 15-44, however the data is focused on women in the 25-44 age group. In the 25-44 age group of women, the National Center for Health Statistics found that 17 percent of women had ever used any form of infertility service, which is a decrease of 3 percent compared to 1995.

Similar to the statement made by Barnhart, Shady Grove Fertility’s Michael J. Levy, MD stated that yes, fertility services are underutilized. This is mostly due to misconceptions about treatment and misconceptions about cost and financial options. Shady Grove Fertility data supports that on average, one in eight couples will need treatment for infertility during their reproductive years.

What a great way to truly kick off the holiday season this year in Waldorf to fill our spirits with joy and love. It was a great chance for our Waldorf, MD office staff and patients to gather and mingle, while supporting all patients in this community who truly pride themselves on togetherness and family. “We weren’t sure what to anticipate when planning this First Annual Waldorf Holiday Social,” said Heather Davis, Financial Counselor and Patient Services Representative. “We wanted to do a spin on an Open House, so it seemed like a natural fit and great idea to include Shady Grove Fertility graduates. It was awesome to see such as great turn out.”

“A patient actually came up to me and said, ‘Walking into the room and seeing the miracle babies made me really stop and think WOW, this stuff really works. They really do build families.’” Heather continued, “For myself, it was amazing to know that I had seen a lot of those couples when they felt like it was at the end of the road, and now I see them with their new babies! It was an awesome feeling.”

There was a sense of abounding joy and compassion in the room and around this party, because little miracles were really walking and crawling around everyone. Past, present and future patients gathered together giving patients going through treatment a real glimmer of hope. Dr. Simon Kipersztok said the event was a real success and can’t wait to see what next year’s event will bring.

Sharing their story with the Today Show: Andrea is carrying twins for Sandi and Philip.

On Shady Grove Fertility’s Facebook page 12,000 participants gather to share their experiences and offer advice. Well, one couple, Marc and Andrea had a very long and difficult journey that happily ended almost two years ago with the birth of their twins. Andrea was active on the page from the start and was able to relate with so many other patients and patients to-be with similar questions and concerns. One of the women Andrea met on the page was Sandi. After realizing they lived close to each other the ladies decided to meet for lunch and found that besides the topic of fertility, they had so much in common. Soon Andrea’s husband Marc and Sandi’s husband Phil were included for a double date.

  • Read Andrea’s story on page 24 of 20 Paths to Positive

Almost three years ago Andrea and Marc received the best news: Andrea’s latest round of IVF was successful and she was pregnant with twins. Andrea and Marc wanted deeply to share this joy with their close friends Sandi and Phil.

Only three months pregnant, Andrea and Marc decided that they would help Sandi and Phil any way they could. When Sandi and Phil shared that they would require a gestational carrier, Marc and Andrea already had a solution: Andrea would be Sandi’s surrogate.

Now, with their own beautiful babies turning two this February, Marc and Andrea are getting ready to give Sandi and Phil the best gift ever: twin babies of their own.

The Shady Grove Fertility Family is so excited to welcome Sandi and Phil’s babies in 2014!
