“One morning to walk one mile to unite one community.”

D.C. Walk of Hope
National Harbor, MD
June 6, 2015 at 10 a.m.
(Check-in opens at 9 a.m.)

Shady Grove Fertility is a proud sponsor of RESOLVE’s 2015 D.C. Walk of Hope to raise awareness and funding for the infertility community. The Walk of Hope, which occurs in cities across the nation from Los Angeles to Chicago to Washington, D.C., is RESOLVE’s signature fundraising event.

The funds raised through the Walk of Hope support RESOLVE: The National Infertility Association programming, such as support groups, educational content, public awareness initiatives, and advocacy efforts to ensure that family building options are available to everyone.

  • Read community members’ stories of why they walk.

RESOLVE Facts about Infertility in the Mid-Atlantic Region

  • More than 325,000 people in the Mid-Atlantic region are affected by infertility, yet current funding only supports 23 RESOLVE local support groups.
  • Maryland is the only state in the area with an insurance mandate that covers infertility treatment.
  • In 2012, RESOLVE helped defeat a bill in Virginia that would have endangered the practice of in vitro fertilization (IVF). Funds from events like the Walk of Hope enable RESOLVE to perform this kind of advocacy.
  • RESOLVE’s headquarters are located in Virginia.

D.C. Walk of Hope – Why We Walk

At Shady Grove Fertility, we walk to show solidarity with the infertility community. Hope is a precious emotion and defines what we do and how we do it. The greatest technological and scientific advancements have no value if one does not have hope. The Walk of Hope represents more than just putting on a t-shirt and coming out to walk a mile—it’s a movement. A movement to tell the community that they are not alone and to inspire hope; a movement to make friends and family aware of what those with infertility feel; and a movement to raise money to help individuals have access to build their family and for legislators to consider expanding and creating greater coverage.

Join us in National Harbor, Maryland on June 6, 2015, to raise hope and awareness and to remind others that they are not alone.

  • Join Shady Grove Fertility’s Walk of Hope teams: K Street Cares and Shady Grove Fertility. Registration is free.
  • Donate to the Walk of Hope and RESOLVE’s fundraising efforts.

Shady Grove Fertility is open 365 days a year, no matter what Mother Nature has in store. When inclement weather is in the forecast, our team starts early, preparing and planning to care for patients throughout the snowstorm. Each Shady Grove Fertility office makes the decision to stay open or to close based on the condition of their location. If an office closes, patients are contacted and their appointments are either rescheduled or they are directed to travel to one of the offices that will remain open.

While some offices may close, the three offices with embryology laboratories located in Rockville, MD; Towson, MD; and Chesterbrook, PA remain open. All time-sensitive procedures, such as egg retrievals, can occur at each of these locations, allowing patients to continue treatment cycles as planned. To stay open, dedicated staff will often stay away from their families overnight in local hotels so they are able to get in to work to take care of their patients.

While our offices remain open year-round, certain treatment types or cycle start dates may not be available every day; for example, a cycle scheduled to begin on a holiday may need to be adjusted or may not be offered at your local office.

Patient Safety is Always a Priority

Our desire to keep patients safe extends beyond medical treatment. While coming to a Shady Grove Fertility office is imperative for some scheduled patient procedures, there are other appointments that may be rescheduled. Even embryo transfers can often be safely delayed by one day, without any compromise to the success of a treatment cycle. If your physician is comfortable rescheduling an appointment because it would not compromise your care or treatment, a Patient Service Representative from your office or your nurse will contact you directly to reschedule the appointment.

If you are unsure about the status of an upcoming appointment due to anticipated inclement weather, please contact either your office or nurse for the most current status of your appointment.

“At Shady Grove Fertility, we do something that’s easy to believe in. Our organization has always been dedicated to providing the best possible work environment, and not just in our Baltimore region but throughout our entire practice,” says Marianne Kreiner, director of human resources at Shady Grove Fertility, upon receiving notification of Shady Grove Fertility’s recognition as one of the “Best Places to Work 2015” by Baltimore Magazine.

Kreiner adds, “We recognize the value of employee feedback in making decisions, addressing challenges, and improving patient care. We give employees a voice within the organization, regardless of level or title, to make suggestions about how the practice can continue to advance and improve.” As part of this employee growth initiative, Shady Grove Fertility continually invests in the ongoing educational endeavors of its employees in order to bring the latest technology and business advancements to the practice to ultimately benefit our patients.

Giving Back to the Community

In addition to a work environment that provides a strong desire to succeed and help our patients, magazine editors recognized Shady Grove Fertility’s generosity in giving back to families struggling to pay for fertility treatment through its alliance with the Tinina Q. Cade Foundation. Shady Grove Fertility also works throughout the year to raise awareness in the infertility community, working with RESOLVE and participating in National Infertility Awareness Week.

Continued Growth and Opportunity

In the past year, Shady Grove Fertility also recognized a growing demand for increased access to patient care. In response to this need, we opened a new satellite office in Hagerstown, MD, as well as hired 150 new employees, including three new female reproductive endocrinologists: Sunita Kulshrestha, M.D., who practices in the Bala Cynwyd, PA, office; Shruti Malik, M.D., who practices in the Fair Oaks, VA, office; and Kate Devine, M.D., who practices in the K Street and Sibley locations in Washington, DC.

“We realize that people have a choice in where they seek care and we never take that for granted. Our continued growth reinforces our core values, which are to deliver truly personalized care. In spite of our size, we are humbled to hear patients say over and again, they never felt lost or devalued or like a number. They always feel respected,” remarks Eugene Katz, M.D., who sees patients in the Towson and Bel Air, MD locations.

Staying True to Our Values

“We have never lost sight of why we are all here. Our patients depend on us. They trust us. Patients in our care can be reassured that we have some of the best minds in reproductive medicine working collaboratively to help them realize their dreams of a family,” adds Mark Segal, chief executive officer of Shady Grove Fertility.

Perhaps the most unique aspect of working for Shady Grove Fertility is the number of employees who are former patients. Of the close to 700 employees currently on staff, many once came through its doors seeking compassionate, medical expertise to build their own families. “This unique perspective and connection gives a large number of our employees a deeply personal commitment to their work, to their patients, and to each other. Many on our staff are intimately familiar with the trials and triumphs our patients go through every day, and their level of compassion as a result is unmatched,” says Kathy Bugge, RNC, clinical education supervisor, who has been with the practice for 23 years.

November 20, 2014 by Shady Grove Fertility

New York, NY – On Tuesday, November 18, 2014, RESOLVE: The National Infertility Association held the Night of Hope Gala in New York City. RESOLVE, an organization that supports and provides a voice for people diagnosed with infertility, established the Hope Awards to recognize professionals, companies, volunteers, and the media who have demonstrated outstanding leadership in the infertility field or have made a positive impact in the lives of people struggling with infertility. As a Visionary Partner with RESOLVE, Shady Grove Fertility is committed to upholding the standards of the Hope Awards and supporting their mission to increase awareness about infertility.

In 2013, SGF’s Robert J. Stillman, M.D. was awarded with the Hope Award for Service. At this year’s event, Michael J. Tucker, Director of IVF and Embryology Laboratories at SGF, BSc Comb Hons, Ph.D., FIBiol, HCLD, was among those who were honored for their vital service to the infertility community. Dr. Tucker was recognized with the Hope Award for Advocacy to commemorate his many years of promoting infertility patient rights and access to care. Using his expertise as an embryologist, he has been able to inform and educate lawmakers in a number of states on legislation that has been integral to the infertility community.

Dr. Michael J. Tucker accepts the Hope Award for Advocacy.

“I have spent most of my life as an embryologist focused on the improvement of laboratory techniques, never imagining that I would be recognized for being an IVF patient advocate,” said Dr. Tucker. Working as a certified laboratory director in the field of clinical embryology for over 30 years, Dr. Tucker has received worldwide recognition for his pioneering work in the in vitro fertilization (IVF) technologies that have helped to revolutionize the treatment of infertility. In 1992, he helped to advance the intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) technique and was responsible for the first “ICSI babies” born in the United States, revolutionizing the treatment of male factor infertility. In 1997, he led the team that was successful in achieving the first-ever pregnancies and births using cryopreserved donor and immature eggs.

“RESOLVE is delighted to recognize Dr. Tucker for his commitment to the infertility community,” said Barbara Collura, RESOLVE’s President/CEO. “The Night of Hope is a special opportunity to come together and thank all those who work tirelessly to improve the lives of the 7.3 million women and men in the United States facing infertility.”

Mark Segal, Shady Grove Fertility CEO, and Alisyn Camerota, CNN anchor and RESOLVE board member, at the Night of Hope.

The 2014 Night of Hope recognized other leaders in the infertility community as well, including Lee Rubin Collins, J.D., a member of the Ethics Committee of the American Society for Reproductive Medicine (ASRM);  Rachel Gurevich, fertility expert for About.com; Susan Donaldson James, a retired ABC News reporter; Cindy Flynn, an applications report writer for Sutter Health; Angelica Nassar, a RESOLVE advocate; researchers at The Hastings Center and the Yale School of Medicine; and Our Misconception was recognized as the best blog to raise awareness about infertility and to shed light on what it’s like to live with infertility.

RESOLVE: The National Infertility Association was established in 1974 and remains the only nationwide non-profit organization established to promote reproductive health and to ensure equal access to all family building options for men and women experiencing infertility or other reproductive disorders. Through events like the Night of Hope, RESOLVE raises money to continue advocacy efforts for the infertility community.

October 14, 2014 by Shady Grove Fertility

At Shady Grove Fertility, we have dedicated our practice to enriching our patients’ lives. To realize this goal, we hire a team that cares and who embodies the values of our practice; exhibiting excellence, integrity, compassion, and commitment. We recently filmed a video with our staff, asking them about their experience being a part of the Shady Grove Fertility family. Kathleen Bugge, BSN, Supervisor, Clinical Education, told us her story:

One of the most disappointing aspects of dealing with infertility is the realization that there is so much out of your control. You can eat healthy, exercise, and do all the ‘right things,’ but it does not mean that it will all work out exactly the way you had planned. I know this disappointment first-hand because I – like so many of our patients – struggled with infertility.

After several years of trying to conceive a second child, my husband and I met with a reproductive endocrinologist not far from our home. The doctor was nice, listened to our story, and after some testing, told us we had male factor infertility. We tried a few IUI cycles, and then spoke about moving on to IVF. The fertility center seemed vague about their statistics though, so I had some reservations and continued to do research on other centers.

While I was searching for information about reproductive medicine, I saw a nursing position advertised at Shady Grove Fertility in Rockville, MD. I thought that in pursuing a clinical nursing position there, I’d get a good education about this disease that was affecting my life. Sure enough, SGF provided me with a wealth of information, and they were transparent about their statistics in a way that my previous treatment center was not. I began treatment at SGF and finally after multiple fertility centers and seven long years of trying, I welcomed my beautiful daughter Molly into the world.

My story of employee-to-patient isn’t unique: several of my colleagues have shared with me that they, too, are current or former patients. I think that going through this experience explains our deep understanding and commitment to each individual patient. We have a level of care and understanding that says I know what you are experiencing, because I have been where you are.

Over the past 20 years, I’ve had the opportunity to help thousands of couples. It has become clear to me that not only did the team I worked with have an emphasis on sharing information and knowledge with patients, but that they also cared deeply about the patients in a way that I have never seen in the medical field. Even when I was a patient, I found it astonishing and also very comforting that my medical team treated my most prized wishes and dreams with the same level of importance that I did.

Recently, Shruti Malik, M.D. joined our medical team. When we first met, we spoke about our initial thoughts of infertility care. She was able to sum up my experiences from the past two decades into one simple thought: “This was the first time as a doctor that I truly felt like a team with my patients. I found that with every patient, we wanted the same things and we were working towards the same goal: a baby.” Our staff and our patients are working together so that our patients can ultimately achieve their dreams.

Over the years, I have had the opportunity to grow and support couples with infertility in ways I could have never imagined. Each year, a group of SGF team members participate in RESOLVE’s Advocacy Day. We carpool down to Capitol Hill to work one-on-one with other infertility advocates, patients, and lawmakers to support the need for continued funding through state-mandated insurance coverage and tax breaks for patients going through infertility. We know that these changes can take years before an impact is felt for all couples struggling with infertility, not just our patients, but in the end, the time and effort is well worth it because we know we will be able to help more people realize their dreams of having a family.

In my time at Shady Grove Fertility, I have been a nurse, a patient, an educator, and an advocate. Many of my fellow employees have also had the benefit of embodying so many roles, while having the opportunity to help so many of our patients. We recently released a video to show our patients how they inspire us and shape our lives, and we would love to share this narrative with you.
