A:

First listen to the individual, then make sure the patient understands how determined we are to help them achieve a family. The shared goal of achieving a successful pregnancy often requires more than one treatment cycle. It is a process that requires skill, mutual trust, and persistence. How you convey the knowledge and treatment plan are just as important as the information.

"Thank you from the bottom of my heart (and my heart-shaped uterus) for making such a beautiful home for 9 months for our little Luca. I had a complication-free pregnancy and enjoyed every moment. After my miscarriage and then preterm birth of my daughter, it was the pregnancy I had prayed for. It was wonderful and only possible because you had taken the time to correctly diagnose me and resect the septum.

You also allowed me to think that getting pregnant was a possibility. You never sugar-coated the odds or statistics, but you gave me something no other doc had given me, and that was hope. You weren't making any promises but just knowing that you had hope and were on my side made a world of difference.

I had been to another doctor who flat out refused to help me because of my age and told me to just go ahead and continue to try on my own with my septum intact. My regular OB diagnosed me with a bicornuate uterus and saw no reason for me not to continue to try to get pregnant on my own. Knowing what I had already been through, there was no way I was going to get pregnant until I had a diagnosis I was comfortable with.

You took the time to order the right tests and make the correct diagnosis. I will be eternally grateful to you and want you to know that you are single handedly responsible for us being a family of 4 instead of 3."

"We cannot express how much we appreciate everything you did to help us start our family. Your support, understanding, and caring attitude made they bumpy road bearable. I hope you don't ever see what you do as just employment. You truly are helping people's dreams come true and for that, we are eternally grateful."

"I just wanted to take the time to express truly what a blessing you have been in our lives! Your professionalism, compassion and knowledge have allowed us to obtain our dream! We are so thankful to have come across your facility and will continue to recommend you to anyone who faces the same hardship as ours…you were simply amazing and you made the whole process easy. Please extend our gratitude to your entire staff. They are all angels in our eyes!"

"My husband and I left another clinic just prior to starting treatment because we felt the physician was extremely condescending and was rushing us through a course of treatment without explanation. I cannot even begin to express how grateful we are for Dr. O'Brien's patience and kindness she demonstrated at our first meeting. She spent close to an hour with us explaining everything-including my diagnosis which we never fully were given an explanation of. We felt so much more relaxed and at peace with beginning treatment. We are very happy with our decision to switch clinics and if friends/family/co-workers ask for local recommendations, I would highly recommend Dr. O'Brien and her team."

"How can I possibly thank you for all you have done for me. You have given me the greatest gift on earth…my twins! My husband and I tried to get pregnant for over four years. We had gone through IVF at another facility and it failed twice. I was about to give up hope and another one of your patients recommended you. I am so grateful that I decided to come and meet with you. You gave me hope again and told me you thought I was a good candidate for IVF. Dealing with infertility is one of the hardest things I’ve had to go through, but you made the process so much better. Everyone was very kind and encouraging. After all the procedures and injections, you start to feel like a guinea pig but it was all worth it. Our results were so much better at your facility. We decided to put back two embryos and both of them took (to my surprise)! We even had two embryos to freeze and use in the future.

Once again, I can’t begin to put into words how thankful I am for all you have done. You gave me the opportunity to become a mother which is something I had always dreamed of becoming but never knew would be so hard to achieve. We now have our two little miracles and I thank God for them every day. I can’t imagine life without them and am glad I didn’t give up my dream of becoming a mother.

I have recommended you to others I know who are having infertility issues and will continue to. If we ever decide to try again, we’ll be coming back to see you! Forever thankful…"

"It is without question that, in speaking with Dr. O’Brien, one quickly recognizes that she possesses a vast knowledge of medicine. From the outset, Dr. O’Brien provided detailed explanations of the anatomical process, the IVF protocol, and, in particular, how they relate to our medical issues. She made herself available during several after-hours telephone consults and provided encouraging support during this process and she welcomed all of our questions. She is the consummate professional and through the course of treatment she maintained a consistent level of outstanding care.
We are certainly hopeful during this ten-day waiting period and we know that the end result ultimately is in God’s hands. However, irrespective of the result, we feel very comfortable knowing that, through the care given to us by Dr. O’Brien, we did everything humanly possible to try to have children.
Without question, we will certainly refer anyone in need of this treatment to Dr. O’Brien and your facility. Thank you very much."

"Just wanted to thank you from the bottom of our hearts for all you have done for us. You helped make this process so much easier on us, in every regard. Your compassion, honesty, patience, guidance & optimism were so incredibly appreciated. No matter what happens next…we both feel we were in the best hands. So thank you for investing so much in us and truly making us feel “watched over”. "

"Thank you for making our dreams come true. It takes a special person to do what you do. You are obviously a successful doctor, but most importantly – a friend. Thank you for your positive, encouraging words, and spirit."

"There are not enough words to express our gratitude for changing our lives. Early on you told us that you would fight for us and that is what you have done.
You gave us courage to preserver and hope to believe in the “impossible”. We often wondered why we had to live through cancer and infertility as a young couple. Eventually we accepted these challenges and realized that they lead us to a wonderful person: you!
You will always be a part of our lives and we will always be thankful to have you as our doctor. Many blessings to you and your family!!!"

"We cannot say enough great things about Dr. O'Brien. Our journey was a long one with various bumps along the way. There were times where we didn't think we could possibly continue on but the kind words, reassurance and positive attitude that Dr. O'Brien offers to her patients kept us going. Dr. O'Brien truly cares about her patients. She always followed up after procedures or disappointing news to see how we were doing. She even called on Christmas Eve to help us cope with another loss and to come up with a plan to move forward so that we were able to face the holidays without the disappointment hanging over our heads. After several failed rounds of IUI and 8 rounds of IVF including several cancelled cycles and we now have 2 beautiful, happy, healthy twin boys and currently 13 weeks pregnant- we owe it all to her!"

"Dr. O'Brien was so wonderful that I have already recommended her to family and friends! She always took the time to explain what was going on and never rushed us when we had lots of questions. She is an extremely knowledgeable and compassionate Dr who never gave up hope for us."

"I don't know where we would be without Dr. O'Brien. We had struggled with infertility for a long time and needed a new approach. She reviewed our case, came up with a treatment plan, and now we are expecting our first baby in just about a week!"

"We dreamed for a long time about having a family- over 10 years with no success, but Dr. O'Brien helped turn that dream into an impending reality. She took the time to explain our options and walked us through every step of the process. We are now just one week away from delivering our first Shady Grove miracle!"
