Q & A

Q: Why did you become a doctor/reproductive endocrinologist (REI)?

My father is a physician, so I grew up around medicine and enjoyed going to the hospital with my father. I became an OB/GYN/REI in order to be involved in women’s health, and being in the fertility field is gratifying because we are able to help people have families.

Q: What are your hobbies and why do you enjoy them?

I work with animal rescue groups, as I love animals and want to do what I can to get them out of harmful situations. I also enjoy music, and play the piano and violin when I have free time.

Q: What is your approach to helping patients who are struggling?

I try to really listen to people—everyone struggles with something, and it is important to listen.

Q: How would you describe your personality?

Friends describe me as a happy person usually able to make people feel comfortable, and a good listener.

"This was myself and my partner's first time trying to conceive. We went to Dr. Garde for an initial consult to discuss IVF and IUI. She was very informative and made sure all of our questions were answered. She never once got annoyed with us and our billion questions. She suggested we try a natural IUI first, and add medication if it seemed to be needed. She did not automatically think it would be necessary considering my age. Every visit we had for blood work, ultrasounds etc, the staff was always friendly and welcoming! We got pregnant on our first IUI attempt and are so grateful. We truly appreciate Dr. Garde, and would strongly recommend her and the Shady Grove experience to anyone!"

"Dr. Garde, I wanted to thank you for providing me some advice during a consult I had with you in mid-October, as I am now pregnant!!
When I saw you, I was a patient of the Walter Reed IVF Program and was about to make a third IVF attempt after two unsuccessful ones with high response (at age 41). You had recommended that I should be on a lower protocol without Lupron MDF. At my baseline visit with WRAMC, Dr. Payson wanted to keep me on Lupron MDF but had planned to reduce my stims to 2 FSH and 1 HMG dose per day. Although this was still lower than my previous protocol--and similar to what you recommended if I wasn't on MDF--I asked if we could lower it even more. I decided that I would rather ramp up the dosage if I have a low response than to try and put on the brakes. Dr. Payson agreed, and I started a 1 FSH / 1 HMG protocol with MDF.
My progress was much slower this time with fewer follicles and lower estradiol. At retrieval, they retrieved 18 eggs (vs. 49 and 42 the previous attempts); 15 were mature, and 10 fertilized. By Day 5 transfer, I had three blastocysts and had them all transferred. I was a little concerned as they were all low grade blastocysts, but they must have been strong because it worked! Not only did it work, but I had a beta HCG at day 14 of 172 (day 16 beta was 320). I'll have an early u/s on Dec 10 to see if I'm carrying multiples.
I was pretty sure this would be my last attempt regardless of the outcome, so I can't thank you enough for giving me the advice that finally made my dream come true. Thank you!!!!"

"I live in Richmond and travel to see Dr. Garde in Woodbridge. She is great. You won't find a nicer doctor that's for sure."

"Of all the doctors I've seen at SGF, Dr. Garde is my favorite. I think she's head and shoulders above the rest in terms of personality and attentiveness to patients... Dr. Garde was so sensitive and thoughtful and attentive. I think the combination of her care combined with SG's facilities and knowledge and the shared risk program makes for a really smart IVF decision."

"Dr. Garde is quite warm and charming."

"We had Dr. Garde at the Woodbridge office and she was very easy to talk to. I always asked her a ton of questions and she always took her time to answer everything for us."

"Dr. Garde is very professional, explained everything to where we understood and was very patient."

"We are very excited about working with Dr. Garde. She seemed genuinely interested in our situation."

"Excellent!! Explains the process very well and is very kind! Would absolutely recommend her to everyone!"

"The care and attention my husband and I received from Dr. Garde and the Woodbridge staff was top notch. They have helped to guide us through every step of our IVF journey. Dr Garde and her staff were very attentive to our needs. She helped us to make our dreams of having our first child a reality."

"I can't say enough good things about Dr. Garde and her staff. They were responsive, kind, and knowledgeable. I appreciated that Dr. Garde was always able to explain my options and respectful of my comfort level with procedures."

"Dr. Garde and her staff were instrumental in my getting pregnant, supportive when I lost that pregnancy at 30 weeks due to preeclampsia and once again later on when I was ready to try again. I was always able to reach someone when I had a question or a concern. I felt that I was more than just a name or number when I was in their offices and I felt respected as I chose the options that I was most comfortable with."

"We ended up going to Shady Grove Fertility after the methods at another clinic were not working. We decided on the shared risk program and we cannot be more thankful that we did. We have a beautiful daughter thanks to shady grove! Our experience was wonderful. From the first day we meet with the doctor up until the day we were discharged from SGF. I remember going in for my last ultrasound and crying in the parking lot because I was going to miss the staff members. They truly do become like family! Dr. Garde and Ashley B. both reached out to me personally before each of my procedures, after hours. That's how I knew I had found the right place for us. They were invested and not just because they had to be. But because they wanted to be. Our life is forever changed because of them!!"

"Dr. Garde helped my husband and I with our dream of becoming parents. She never gave up on us and never let us give up on ourselves. The office in Woodbridge is amazing and the whole staff is incredibly caring. I recommend them to everyone!"
