Shady Grove Fertility physicians hosted nearly 150 free educational events in 2018 and helped thousands of couples successfully overcome infertility. With more than 10 SGF babies born each day, physician-hosted open seminars cover the myriad of treatment options—personalized to each patient—that are available at SGF. Events are hosted live throughout Maryland, Pennsylvania, Virginia, Washington, D.C., Georgia, and Florida, and virtually from any location. Each event offers an open question and answer session or private opportunity to ask questions of the physician host.

“What to Expect When You’re Not Expecting” is a seminar series that covers a variety of topics and walks attendees through the different touchpoints of the fertility journey. “Not knowing what to expect when seeing a fertility specialist is what prevents many people from scheduling that first consultation. What this event is intended to do is alleviate that fear by arming attendees with information so they can feel confident in taking that first step,” says Dr. Best who will be hosting an event on February 13 in Atlanta.

“I hear over and over again from my patients, ‘If I had only known how simple fertility testing was, I would have done it sooner.’ Not to mention, they tell me of the tremendous relief they feel to finally have some answers after years of trying. I remind them, four simple tests is usually all it takes to determine the cause of infertility,” adds Dr. Best.

In fact, according to a 2018 survey of SGF patients, 65% of respondents said they wish they hadn’t waited so long to see a fertility specialist. “I remind my patients, especially considering how important a woman’s age is as it relates to fertility potential, the longer you wait to diagnose and treat the underlying cause of what’s preventing conception, the more narrow your treatment options become. We see our highest success rates in couples who seek a fertility evaluation early,” adds Best.

“There are many different treatment options available and they don’t all involve the most advanced, in vitro fertilization (IVF). In fact, half of SGF’s treatments are considered ‘low tech’ or more basic and may involve simple timed intercourse, medications, and/or outpatient intrauterine insemination (IUI),” shares Best.

“Is my period normal” is a question millions of women ask themselves, especially if they are trying to conceive. “A woman’s menstrual cycle reveals a tremendous amount of information that’s useful to us as fertility specialists, and lends an understanding to potential issues that are preventing a healthy pregnancy from occurring,” says Wende Allen, PA-C, host of the virtual event “What Your Menstrual Cycle Says about Your Fertility” on February 28. “Often patients don’t realize that absent, heavy, irregular, or painful periods indicate an underlying problem that can make becoming pregnant without help very challenging. Fortunately, we have many treatments available that can assist,” adds Allen.
