More About Dr. Sandy Li
Q: WHY DID YOU BECOME A DOCTOR/REPRODUCTIVE ENDOCRINOLOGIST?
A: As a child, visiting my mother while she was at work as a physician made an ever-lasting impression on me. I dreamed one day I would be just like her and take care of people when they needed help the most. As an undergrad, I became fascinated by the intricate workings of the neuroendocrine system – how one signal could lead to a cascade of events that affects so many facets of our biological function such as reproduction. I spent several years working in the laboratory studying neuro-development during graduate school and medical school. Seeing how research in the laboratory gets transformed into treatments for patients is what led me to the field of reproductive endocrinology, where we use the latest technologies to assist patients in bringing about the miracles of life.
Q: WHO INSPIRES YOU?
A: My two boys inspire me every day. They remind me how fortunate I am to be a parent, and what a privilege it is to be a part of that special journey to parenthood.
Q: WHAT ARE YOUR HOBBIES AND WHY DO YOU ENJOY THEM?
A: I love music (singing, playing piano). I also love to cook, go for a bike ride and photography.
Q: WHAT ABOUT SGF MAKES YOU THE MOST PROUD?
A: I am most proud of the teamwork at SGF. Everyone at SGF has a unique role, whether it is helping an out-of-area patient arrange for accommodations or coming up with the final treatment plan, the goal always converges into making this sometimes difficult journey as easy as possible. I feel so proud to be a part of this amazing team.
Q: WHAT’S ON YOUR BUCKET LIST?
A: Take my kids to an African Safari, visit the Greek Islands, Bora Bora, food tour in Hong Kong and Spain.
Q: DESCRIBE A TIME WHEN YOU WERE INSPIRED BY A PATIENT.
A: I am inspired by my patients every day. Their courage, optimism, and perseverance during this often difficult journey is a constant reminder of why I chose to become a reproductive endocrinologist, and what a privilege it is to take care of them.
Q: WHAT IS YOUR APPROACH TO HELPING PATIENTS WHO ARE STRUGGLING?
A: Empathy – I try to put myself in their shoes and think what I would do if this were my own situation, or that of a family member. Honesty – truth can sometimes be disappointing, however I believe giving my patients the facts will equip them to make the best decision in the long-term. Optimism – miracles do happen, we should never lose hope.
Q: HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR PERSONALITY?
A: My friends say I am a happy person who always sees the upside of things.
Q: WHAT IS SOMETHING ABOUT YOU THAT WOULD SURPRISE MOST PEOPLE?
A: I love the TV show “top chef,” especially the aspect of seeing so many challengers come up with many variations of a dish based on one ingredient. My children are the most critical judges of my own cooking!
