More about Dr. Monica Best

Q: WHY DID YOU BECOME A DOCTOR/REPRODUCTIVE ENDOCRINOLOGIST?
A:
For as long as I can remember, I have always been intrigued by the science of reproduction. I knew I wanted to go into women’s health from a very early age. I had a very personal experience with a close family member who struggled with infertility and pregnancy loss which spurred my decision to become an infertility specialist. Through this life-altering experience, I became passionate about building the skills, medical knowledge, and embodying the compassion necessary to help women like my cousin overcome challenges to conceiving in order to have the family they desire and deserve.

My own struggle with infertility renewed my life’s passion to become a Reproductive Endocrinologist and Infertility specialist. My passion has never wavered and is confirmed on a daily basis in the very special relationships I develop with my patients in their infertility journeys.

Q: WHO INSPIRES YOU?
A:
My mom inspires me. She is truly a beautiful person inside and out who displays love and compassion in some of the toughest situations. She has inspired me to live a life in which I’m mindful of the obligation we all have to give back to others not only of our time and talents, but to do so with kindness and empathy as our guiding principle.

Q: WHAT ARE YOUR HOBBIES AND WHY DO YOU ENJOY THEM?
A:
I enjoy traveling abroad and experiencing other cultures. I also cherish the time I have to spend with family, friends, my husband, and precious daughter. I could be doing just about anything as long as I’m surrounded by family. I enjoy taking my daughter to places like The Georgia Aquarium and the Tellus Museum (a Smithsonian Institute of natural history and science) because shares my love of nature and science.

Q: WHAT IS SOMETHING ABOUT YOU THAT WOULD SURPRISE MOST PEOPLE?
A:
I was chosen to be a “Little Sister” to Miss USA in the 1983 Miss Universe Pageant in St. Louis, Missouri when I was 6 years old. I participated in Miss Universe marketing events. I walked on stage alongside Miss USA while millions of people watched this televised event.

Q: WHAT ABOUT SGF MAKES YOU THE MOST PROUD?
A:
I am so incredibly proud of the emphasis that SGF puts on the quality patient care and helping couples achieve their dreams of having a family. SGF physicians pride themselves in evidence-based phenomenal infertility care. I’m honored to be a part of such a wonderful group of SGF physicians and affiliated clinics throughout the nation and the world.

Q: WHAT’S ON YOUR BUCKET LIST?
A:
I would love to be able to travel the world with those I love.

Q: DESCRIBE A TIME WHEN YOU WERE INSPIRED BY A PATIENT.
A:
I am inspired by patients every single day! Infertility is one of the hardest challenges some couples will experience in their lifetime. Given the magnitude of the physical and emotional struggles many couples face to have a child, the strength of the human spirit is evident. I have the opportunity to experience the intense ability of patients and couples to love whether they are welcoming a child born through the use of donor egg or donor embryo when they never considered this option prior to experiencing infertility, or the birth of a healthy child after having 7 prior miscarriages. Whatever the journey entails, I am blessed to be involved in the success of overcoming infertility and the joy that comes with the birth of a child.

Q: WHAT IS YOUR APPROACH TO HELPING PATIENTS WHO ARE STRUGGLING?
A:
My approach to helping patients with infertility is to be as detail-oriented as possible in order to ascertain all challenges to infertility which may be physiologic, emotional, or both. Having experienced the turmoil associated with my own infertility, I really put myself in the shoes of my patients. I offer patients the best cutting-edge, science-based infertility treatment. Most importantly, I’ve never lost sight of how important it is to be compassionate throughout the journey of infertility treatment.

Q: HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR PERSONALITY?
A:
I’m outgoing, sensitive, and loyal. I’m very persistent and not afraid of hard work. I’m passionate about those things I believe in. Whatever causes I hold dear will be followed through to the end.
