Infertility couseling is a new and highly specialized area. Our mental health professionals are at the forefront of the field with extensive training and knowledge about all aspects of infertility counseling, offering individual, couple and group therapies.

Sharon Covington, MSW, LCSW-C
Program Director

Director of Psychological Support Services, Mrs. Covington is a licensed clinical social worker in Maryland and a Board Certified Diplomate in Clinical Social Work. She is a nationally recognized expert on the psychological aspects of reproductive health and has over thirty years experience as a psychotherapist. Mrs. Covington is a Clinical Assistant Professor at Georgetown University School of Medicine and co-author/editor of Infertility Counseling: A Comprehensive Handbook For Clinicians.

Patricia Sachs, LCSW-C

Mrs. Sachs has worked with individuals, couples, children and families in hospital, university and private practice settings. She has been on the counseling staff at Shady Grove Fertility since 1991, and her special interests include counseling patients undergoing IVF, treatment for secondary infertility, as well as those using donor gametes. Mrs. Sachs is a Licensed Clinical SocialWorker in both Maryland and the District of Columbia, and sees patients in the Rockville office. (ext. 126)


Carol Toll, LCSW-C

Mrs.Toll has an extensive background working with individuals, families, and groups. She has a special interest and expertise in issues related to women’s health, infertility, and cancer. Mrs.Toll is a Licensed Clinical SocialWorker in both Maryland and Virginia. Mrs.Toll sees patients in both the Rockville and Columbia offices. (ex. 127)


Ellen Eule, LCSW-C

Mrs. Eule has over thirty years experience, as a licensed and board certified Clinical Social Worker in Maryland and Washington DC. She’s worked with individuals, couples, families and groups, in many settings including HMOs, agencies and private practice. She has a special interest in assessment, issues related to grief and loss, infertility counseling, postpartum depression and adoption. Mrs. Eule sees patients in Rockville and Frederick. (ex. 129)

Michelle Hester, LCSW-C

Mrs. Hester has thirty years of experience working with couples, individuals, and groups in variety of settings. She has specialized in adoption services, both before and after placement, with interest in infertility, adoption, and early adjustment issues for new parents. Mrs. Hester is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker in Maryland and the District of Columbia. She sees patients in the DC and Maryland offices. (ext. 142)


Tara Simpson, Psy.D.

Dr. Simpson is a licensed psychologist in Maryland. Her special interests include providing counseling to individuals with issues related to reproductive health, including infertility. She is a member of American Psychological Association and Maryland Psychological Association. Dr. Simpson sees clients in the Baltimore office. (410-303-3402)

Erica Mindes, Ph.D., LCP

Dr. Mindes is a Licensed Clinical Psychologist in the Commonwealth of Virginia. She has worked with adult individuals, couples, and groups in agency, university, and hospital settings. She has a special interest in issues related to infertility, IVF, and third-party reproduction, and has conducted research and written on the psychological aspects of infertility. Dr. Mindes is a member of the American Psychological Association and American Society for Reproductive Medicine Mental Health Professional Group. Laura S. Covington, MSW, LCSW-C

Ms. Covington has experience in providing assessments and counseling with individuals, families, and groups in a variety of settings. She has a special interest in developing strategies for stress and coping during infertility treatment. Ms. Covington is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker in MD, DC, VA, and PA. Mia Joelsson

Mia Joelsson, LCSW-C

Mrs. Joelsson is a licensed clinical social worker in Pennsylvania and Maryland. She has a special interest in working with individuals and couples facing reproductive challenges of infertility, pregnancy, pregnancy loss, and postpartum adjustment. Mrs. Joelsson is passionate about helping “infertility graduates” who are adapting to the new realities of pregnancy and parenting after struggling with infertility. She sees clients primarily in the Harrisburg, PA office. (240-454-3002)
