In the Legislative Arena -- Standing Up for Patients

RESOLVE, the National Infertility Association, recently enlisted the expertise of Dr. Robert Stillman, Shady Grove Fertility’s Medical Director, and Dr. Gilbert Mottla of the SGF-Annapolis office to advocate before the Maryland General Assembly on behalf of fertility patients. At issue: upcoming legislation affecting fertility insurance coverage for IVF (House Bill 701). In his testimony, Dr. Mottla noted that patients who suffer a miscarriage have to ‘re-wait’ the two-year waiting period before insurance benefits for IVF are available. This, he says, “is the only time an adverse event (miscarriage) disqualifies a patient for treatment they would otherwise receive.” Some insurance companies believed that the legislation would encourage recurrent miscarriage patients to be treated with IVF. After the hearing, Dr. Mottla worked to correct that misunderstanding, explaining to insurance representatives that treating miscarriage with IVF was neither the intent of the Bill nor standard medical practice. The legislation’s language will continue to be refined and returned to General Assembly for consideration.

Stand Up for Yourself -- If you’d like to get involved in the work to insure fertility treatment around the country, Thursday, April 10 is the day to do it. RESOLVE is sponsoring Advocacy Day on Capitol Hill. Among other tasks, the grassroots movement will be meeting with U.S. Senators and House Reps to discuss The Family Building Act of 2007 (HR2892). Get involved. Get more info.

Save the Date

RESOLVE is sponsoring a Family Building Conference (Adoption, Infertility Treatment, and Donor Options) on Saturday, April 12 in Bethesda.
