Robert J. Stillman, MD, FACOG
Dr. Stillman earned his medical degree at Georgetown University in the District
of Columbia. He completed a residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at Duke

University. Dr. Stillman is a board certified reproductive endocrinologist with
diverse knowledge from over 20 years experience in teaching and in the treatment

Frank E. Chang, MD
Frank Chang, MD is a board certified reproductive endocrinologist and founder of the former Mid-Atlantic Fertility Centers. He is a native of Washington, D.C. and completed his medical training at the Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas after graduating from Stanford University. His post-graduate training included a residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at Ohio State University and a fellowship in Reproductive Endocrinology, also at Ohio State. He began clinical practice in Bethesda, MD in 1985. Dr. Chang is a Clinical Associate Professor of Reproductive Endocrinology
at George Washington University.

Until his arrival to the Shady Grove Fertility Reproductive Sciences Center, Dr. Kipersztok was a Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Florida in Gainesville. A graduate of Brandeis University and Tufts University School of Medicine, he trained in Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Michigan Medical Center. Dr. O'Brien received her medical degree from the Brown-Dartmouth Medical Program in Providence, RI and completed her residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at Prentice Women's Hospital at Northwestern University in Chicago, IL. In the three years following residency, Dr. O'Brien remained at Northwestern as a Clinical Instructor. She then completed fellowship training in Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility at Northwestern University and earned a Master of Science in Clinical Investigation. Dr. Katz is board certified in obstetrics and gynecology and reproductive endocrinology. He received his medical degree in 1978 from The University of Chile, Magna Cum Laude and was top graduate in his class. Dr. Katz then went on to an OB/GYN residency at Catholic University in Santiago, Chile. In 1981 he came to the United States and completed his OB/GYN residency at Tulane University in New Orleans in 1985. In 1987, he completed a two-year fellowship in Reproductive Endocrinology/Infertility at the Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland. Dr. Katz served as Assistant Professor and Director of In Vitro Fertilization at the University of Maryland from 1987 to 1992. Dr. Katz has been with GBMC Fertility since 1992 and became Director of the Center in 1997. Dr. Katz is currently Assistant Professor at Johns Hopkins University, School of Medicine and a Clinical Assistant Professor at the University of Maryland. He has served as the Director for the Baltimore - Washington Area Reproductive Endocrinologists (BWARE), an educational organization of specialists, between 1995 and 1997. He has published over 60 journal articles. Dr. Katz also serves as an ad hoc reviewer for Fertility and Sterility. Dr. Katz has consistently been named TOP DOC by Baltimore Magazine (2000, 2004 and 2005) and was recognized as being among the Best Doctors in America®. He pursued a Research Fellowship in Maternal-Fetal Medicine at Yale University School of Medicine, CT. and a Fellowship in Reproductive Endocrinology at Washington University School of Medicine, St. Louis, MO. Dr. Yazigi was Director of Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility at Temple University School of Medicine, PA from 1991 to 1996 and joined the GBMC Fertility Center, Baltimore, MD in 1997. He is currently Assistant Professor at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. Dr. Yazigi has published numerous scientific papers and has lectured both in the country and abroad. He is the recipient of Research Awards both in the United States and overseas and is member of national and foreign Medical Specialty Societies. Wende Allen, PAC
In 2004, Ms. Wende Allen joined the staff at GBMC Fertility Center as a Physician Assistant. She will continue in this role as the Center transitions into Shady Grove Fertility Centers at GBMC in 2007. She works closely with the physicians in all aspects of the evaluation and management of our patients, and will continue as Clinical Coordinator for this Center’s Egg Donor and Surrogacy program.
She brings more than 15 years of experience as a Physician Assistant specializing in infertility and advanced gynecologic care. Ms. Allen completed her undergraduate studies in Behavior Science at York College of Pennsylvania in 1990. She then received her degree as a Physician Assistant in 1992, graduating with highest honors from Essex College in Baltimore, MD. She maintains Board Certification through the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants, and is an Affiliate with both the Maryland Academy of Physician Assistants, and the Association of Physician Assistants in OB/GYN.

Michael J. Tucker, PhD Director, IVF and Embryology
Laboratories
Dr. Tucker received his undergraduate degree in Zoology and Physiology from
the University of London and his doctorate in Reproductive Physiology from
the University of Birmingham in the UK. He has worked in the field of
reproductive medicine/embryology for over sixteen years. Prior to joining
our practice as the Director of Andrology and IVF Laboratories in 1997, Dr.
Tucker spent nine years establishing a track record of exceptional pregnancy
rates for IVF and other assisted technologies as the Scientific Director for
a leading fertility program in Atlanta. Dr. Tucker has received world-wide
recognition for his pioneering work in the IVF technologies that have helped
to revolutionize the treatment of infertility. In 1992, he helped to advance
the ICSI technique and was responsible for the first ICSI baby
born in the US. In 1997, he led the team that was successful in achieving the
first pregnancy and birth using cryopreserved eggs. |

Dr. William G. Kearns
Director, Shady Grove Center for Preimplantation Genetic Diagnosis
Dr. Kearns earned his doctorate at Eastern Virginia Medical School in Norfolk, Virginia. He completed his fellowship training in medical genetics at the renowned McKusick-Nathan's Institute for Genetic Medicine of The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. Upon completion of his fellowship training, Dr. Kearns joined the faculty at Hopkins and established their first laboratory of molecular cytogenetics. At Hopkins, Dr. Kearns collaborated with other investigators in the development of experimental strategies to detect genetic abnormalities in single cells. He also played a significant role in the development of gene therapy protocols for diseases such as cystic fibrosis and adenosine deaminase deficiency. Over the past six years Dr. Kearns also devised research protocols to detect genetic abnormalities in sperm of infertile males and preimplantation embryos. Dr. Kearns' laboratory was the first to report a high frequency of aneuploid sperm in men with male factor infertility. He has become one of the real experts and innovators in the field of preimplantation genetics worldwide. Dr. Kearns is a member of the American Society of Human Genetics, the European Society of Human Genetics, the American Society of Reproductive Medicine and the European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology. Dr. Kearns has numerous publications in peer reviewed journals and has applied for and received grants from the National Institutes of Health, the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation and numerous other funding agencies. In addition to his clinical responsibilities, Dr. Kearns will also continue an active research program in conjunction with Shady Grove Fertility RSC.

Kevin S. Richter, PhD Research Director
Dr. Richter earned his undergraduate degree in Biological Sciences from Dickinson College in Carlisle, Pennsylvania, and his doctorate in Biological Sciences from the University of California, Irvine. He has worked as a research scientist in the field of reproductive medicine for nearly ten years, working at the Fertility Center of Las Vegas for 5 years before joining our practice in 2003. Dr. Richter has authored numerous publications in peer-reviewed scientific journals. He has received grants through the National Science Foundation and other agencies to fund his research. In addition to his research activities, he has been a university lecturer and laboratory instructor for subjects including human biology, ecology, environmental studies, and statistical analysis.

Psychological Support Services Sharon N. Covington, MSW-LCSW-C
Mrs. Covington received her degree from the University of Maryland School
of Social Work and Community Planning. She is a Licensed Certified Social
Worker-Clinical in Maryland- and a board certified diplomate in Clinical
Social Work with over 20 years of clinical experience. Mrs. Covington is
a nationally recognized leader on the psychological aspects of reproductive
health problems. She is a Clinical Assistant Professor at the Georgetown
University School of Medicine, Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology in
Washington, D.C. Mrs. Covington is co-author and editor of Infertility
Counseling: A Comprehensive Handbook for Clinicians. |
Nursing Staff
Our nursing staff plays a pivotal role in the ongoing care of our patients. They
are dedicated to guiding couples through each step of the diagnosis and treatment
processes. From basic testing to IVF, these specialty certified nurses provide
continuous comprehensive education, information, and support to patients
participating in our fertility program.
Patient Services
We understand that it is attention to detail, to the myriad of little things, that
will ensure a positive experience in our practice. Our Patient Services Program
was created to identify and exceed our patients needs and wants. The coordinators
of this program have extensive knowledge of fertility issues as well as an in depth
understanding of the nuances of the medical, emotional, and financial aspects of our
fertility programs. In addition to being a valuable resource, they actively seek your
input so that we can continually improve our service to you.
