Two Bills To Help Infertilie in MD
Shady Grove Fertility Center, along with Resolve, recently testified in front of the Maryland House of Delegates on two bills to help fertility patients in Maryland.
The first hearing was held on February 19 concerning House Bill 385 which clarifies the language in the current infertility insurance mandate to define a successful pregnancy as one that results in a live birth. Why is this important? In Maryland the law allows for insurance coverage of infertility treatment only after a two year waiting period. If a woman gets pregnant, but miscarries, the two-year waiting period could be reset, resulting in the patient having to wait another 24 months before she is eligible for IVF insurance coverage. Shady Grove Fertility was represented in this hearing by physician Gilbert Mottla of the Annapolis office as well as a patient of SGFC.
The second hearing was held on March 12 and introduced House Bill 1089. This bill would eliminate the two-year mandatory waiting requirement for fertility treatment when a doctor determines that the patient and spouse have a history of infertility or when waiting two years before an in vitro fertilization attempts would be detrimental to the patient or prospective child. Dr. Mottla once again represented SGFC by testifying in favor of this bill.
As of April 9, both bills remain in discussion in the House.
